: which ring and pinion brand would you go with ? Why ?
larietrope Jul 8th, 09, 1:59 PM for 3:42 ring and pinion
1. Moser
2.Richmond
3. Motive
4. Yukon
Talked to u.s. gear and told me they were bought out, out of inventory, but trying to get back into business.
Beaux Jul 8th, 09, 2:52 PM moser / eaton.
Because its what I have always run (factory and in the new rear end but the car is down for some time due to an over my head resto)
Never had an issue with Eaton, just work and it just feels right. I tend to lay my coin where I think I have the best chances of success so thats what I did.
I'd wait for BGH and tlowe - those guys are the kings. They may agree or disagree but whatever their reply I would take as gold.
tlowe Jul 8th, 09, 3:32 PM moser does not make their own gears, as BGH said in the other post, they use motive or usgear.
richmond, good gear, can be noisy, not always
motive, good gear
yukon, good gear, the ones i use the most.
almost any gear manufacturer can have noise. the only gears i have seen be consistently quiet is oem gm gear sets. but they did not make a 3.42 ratio. 3.31 is your next closet ratio.
Beaux Jul 8th, 09, 3:56 PM moser does not make their own gears, as BGH said in .
My mix up. The posi is what I was referring to, just assumed (yeah, I know, bad thing) that everything was eaton due to my reciepts.

Thank you for the clarification, thats exactly why I mentioned you two.:beers:
bracketchev1221 Jul 9th, 09, 7:34 AM I like the richmond gears. Considering they're in my 12 bolt and they haven't broken yet.
I have 4.56 Motive set that I installed. Works fine, quiet. Setup numbers clearly marked on the gears. So far no prob.
big gear head Jul 9th, 09, 10:09 AM I'm selling Yukon at this time. I've sold Motive, US Gear, Richmond, Precision and others over the years. I haven't seen a lot if difference in the name brand gears. The house brand gears are not as good, such as Summit, Jeg's and that type. The cheap gears are just that, CHEAP. Installation kits are the same, cheap is cheap and quality cost more. If you want a real good gear then go with an OEM gear. These are very rare for the 12 bolt now, but you can still get them for the 8.5 and 7.5 rear ends. They are quite a bit more expensive than after market.
zeke67 Jul 9th, 09, 7:00 PM My Richmonds are quiet, FWIW.
TonyZ Jul 9th, 09, 8:40 PM Richmonds - durable, good quality. Wouldn't shy away from the others you mentioned though.
