1964 Malibu with 1968 12 bolt posi. About 1000 miles ago new rear control arm poly bushings were installed. I just noticed that the bushings in the top of the rearend have moved (both sides). The rubber inside the bushing has pushed out about 1/8" inch toward the outside of the car. Is this normal, just the spot that it wants to ride or is something wrong here? Dave

Do you have the large poly washers installed. If not the bushings can move and let the shells rub against the frame and rear end mounting brackets. I had this happen. The shells wore some pretty substantial circular grooves into my brackets.
The shells didn't move in the rearend housing just the rubber moved in the shell. Passenger side I have the poly washers, wide one on the outside & thin poly washer on the inside, driver's side I have the wide washer on the outside and no room for the thin one on the inside. I went to install new Edelbrock adjustable upper control arms and this is when I noticed the rubber part of the rear end bushings had moved. The new arms came with two new poly bushings, but they only had one wide washer (slightly narrower that the ones in my car) per bushing. And the instructions that are not very good, say to install these wide poly washers on the inside of the bushing, but there is no room on the driver's side for the washer. They say to cut down the washer, but the gap is so small that I don't think there would be much left of the poly washer. I don't understand what these poly washers do, I don't think stock bushings have the washers. Also the new bushing have the same part number as the old ones just different poly washers. Dave
