: 8.5 carrier freshening - shims?

I'm going through an 8.5" 10 bolt carrier that I got from the JYD. I pulled it apart and it looks to be in nice shape. This carrier was from a ~200 HP Pontiac Phoenix (who would have guessed), so it hasnt had much abuse...

I have an extra shim kit laying around, and was wondering how many shims to add to the clutches to compensate for the wear in the factory clutches. Is there a measurement I can take?

Also, I read that the shims are supposed to go on the carrier side (near the bearing) as opposed to next to the spider gear.

Suggestions?

I think you are getting a few things confused. The clutches are shimed inside the differential case, between the outside clutch disc and the case. I doubt that you have any shims that will fit this case because there were none made for it. I found some that will work, but they are for another application, not the 8.5. There are no shims that go between the bearing and the case. That is the way that the Dana rear ends are shimmed, not the GM rear ends.

OK, I read it too fast and got confused myself. I thought you siad behind the bearing, but now I see that you said near the bearing. That's right. What kind of shim kit do you have?
