Hey guys,
Has anyone seen the article in Super Chevy last month about these steering boxes? there is a guy out in California who is taking the inners from newer F-Body's and putting them into the original A-body steering boxes. If anyone has ordered or already has one, please let me know how it feels. I am thinking about converting to power steering and this would have to be part of the upgrade if it is any good.

All original, all the time
You mean the innards from, say, a '92 Firebird? I thought you could get that sort of thing done from Lee Manufacturing or Flaming River. Basically you just pull the innards out and put them in your old box. I didn't see the article, but was there anything to address the rag joint issue and steering coupler?
I've got a '92 box in my basement, but may just go with an AGR unit to save myself lots of hassle.

This is really a no brainer swap, any 800 series innards will interchange into any 800 series housing. The housings are the same except for the hose ports and sometimes the mounts. I took the variable quick ratio innards from a 97 Tahoe box and put them in a 70 Chevelle housing for Tom M. Use the wire bail stop (if there is one) and the end cap from the donor housing and swap in the rest of the parts. Adjust preloads as you assemble.
When Tom gets it installed maybe he can post and let us know how it feels.

Hey guys,
Is the manual steering box from my 64 an 800 series box? I would love to keep my manual steering box and still get the quick ratio from the new box. I just found out that I have no accessory mounting holes drilled into the heads on my 283 to mount power steering. I am looking into some new heads, but that seems like alot of money just to be able to connect a power steering pump.

Sean, the correct PS setup for your car wouldn't use the heads for mounting anyway... The brackets will bolt to the block and the exhaust manifold. Unless you switched to a Long waterpump setup...
The P/S boxes mentioned will swap right in, but you will need a Pitman arm for P/S...
I bought an AGR box, and it uses the old-style hose fittings with the quick ratio innards... even uses an old-style input so I didn't have to replace the rag-joint...

I am pleased with the 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee box in my 65 Elky. It takes the 3/4" rag joint spline and the Lee Mfg. hose end adapters. It fit like a glove and is about right on responsiveness with the 65 steering pump. It took it from the non-ending lock to lock to about 2 3/4 turns L to L. $50.00 at most yards. This was a true bolt in using the 65 pitman arm. graemlins/hurray.gif
