I'm putting my front end back together the problem I have is with the attachment bolts for the upper ball joint. The ball joint is from Napa part # 260-1064 , The bolts that came with the new ball joints are 5/16, and the ball joint itself has 5/16 holes for mounting it to the A-arm. However the upper A-arm itself as 1/4 inch holes. When you read the instructions though they make ref to using the 1/4 inch bolts supplied, which are actually 5/16 bolts.

When I removed the old ball joints they were attached with 1/4 inch bolts but I did not take notice what size the holes were in the old ball joint mount flanges.

I realize the original ball joints were riveted in place and before I drill the 1/4 inch holes out in the a-arms to 5/16, I thought I would ask if this is just what needs to be done or if I have a different issue to address.

Hey thanks...... tried to respond sooner but keep getting a data base error, and couldn't get on.

Right now I got the A-arm on the bench, ball joint assembled using 1/4 inch bolts, having just enough room for the wrenches to tighten them down. Say did you use 5/16 conventional bolts or 5/16 socket head bolts (allen head) to facilitate tightening them down, with having to fight with the wrenches on the bottom side.

put the bolt in from the bottom. one flat will be up against the steel collar around the boot, shouldn't need to hold it at all.
