hey guys - i'm having some trouble with my transmission in my '67 Malibu, trouble like it won't work. drop it into drive, it attempts to go forward, but won't go. this is a project car i'm just getting back into. i recently replaced the tranny lines, and before this i had no trouble. can this be my problem? is it possible to reverse the tranny lines and get this affect? the car only has 20k original miles on it. any help/thoughts on this?? thanks, Brian

Does the transmission work in reverse? Fluid level full? checked with engine running.

It's possible to reverse them, but it won't hurt a thing, I suspect that it's low on fluid. Give us a little more info to go on and we can help you. When was the last time the vehicle was actually driven? Other then the transmission lines, what else has been done that may effect the operation of the transmission?

ok, Finally got a chance to check things out, this is where i'm at. i Checked my fluid level, right where it should be when warm in nuetral. i found my receipt for the new tranny lines - the reciept said the lines were for a 3-speed, i have a powerglide. they fit, no problems. would this cause any trouble? i don't know if there would be any differance's. diameter of line maybe? the heater core went when i replaced the lines. connected the lines together until i have cahnce to replace it. i drop it in drive, attempts to go forward, or in reverse backward, but just won't go. only other thing i replaced was starter when i did the tranny lines. The vehicle was last driven on the road in '83. it had no trouble driving though before i replaced the lines....
i jacked the rearend up yesterday, car will drive forward and beackward with wheels off ground. jacked it up to make sure brakes were not frozen. wish i were a mechanic somedays....:noway:

is it possible your front wheels are locked up? we ran into this a few months ago with a set of aftermarket 14 inch wheels not designed for a disc brake upgrade. jim

Pull the lines loose and check for flow....maybe something is stopped up.Not sure on Powerglide, but some trannys flow thru the convertor to the cooler or visa-versa, which might make the fluid level low.
If you give it a little throttle, does it load up like the trans is engaged ,or just freewheel?
Just do this test momentarily,if it is slipping ,it will burn clutches quickly

Low servo stuck from non-movement of 20+ years?? Pressure regulator valve stuck?? Reverse runs from clutch pack, not related to low band in Powerglide. Need to check line pressure. Not for novice project.......

Get help to check fluid level. Check it the motor running, in low gear, with your helper holding the foot brake so you don't get run over.

Can it actually back-up??

i'll pull the lines off this weekend and check for flow. the fluid level is fine, i checked it while hot and in nuetral. when i give it throttle, it does load up and attempt to go, but won't go. just teases!

Motorvation - it has moved in the last 6 years. not cruising down the road but down the driveway, across the lawn from spot to spot. never had a problem with the tranny. but once i replaced the lines, soon after the trouble started. don't know of the pressure reg. or how to check line pressure... will have to get some help for that project. and no, it won't back up either. same as trying to go forward.
