: Crastman briggs lawnmower issues
matt60j Jul 5th, 09, 11:10 AM My sister has a 4 year old rider from Sears with a 24hp twin overhead valve Briggs engine. Runs good at first and after a while starts to sputter. If you gradually pull the choke you can limp it out a little longer untill it stalls and will not restart. I took the carb apart and found nothing. At first I thought it was fuel delivery now it seems like a heat issue. Anybody got any idea? Thanks! -MATT
nothing runs like a deere :)

I have a push mower that did that. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb even though I didn't find anything that seemed wrong.
When I drained the gas tank, I found the little aluminum baffle from the gas cap which has something to do with tank venting. I found that if I didn't tighten the cap, the mower would run normally, but when I screwed it down all the way, it would react just as you describe.
You can't run it like that too long because the vibrations will spin the cap off but it might give you some idea if venting is the problem.
69malibu3speed Jul 5th, 09, 1:03 PM Maybe it's an issue with the fuel pickup. Sometime a leak in pickup line can prevent fuel from being transfered from the tank to the carb, depending on the design of course, or, if there is a fuel filter perhaps it's clogged.
Jerry Briggs Jul 5th, 09, 1:09 PM Had the same problem with mine, fuel filter was clogged up.

My buddies new Deere has a Briggs twin in it... ;)
Ricks70ss Jul 5th, 09, 2:25 PM Matt: I had the same issue with mine. Bought a new gas filter. Plus the vent cap. I took a small nail & made the whole a bit bigger. Runs good. I'm trying to get my buddy next door to race me :). He has a Deer.

Is that from a Home improvement center or a John Deere dealer?
Mine is from a Dealer and has a Kawasaki twin cyl.
Just curious, there does seem to be a difference, just not sure of what all the differences are.

The difference is everything but the paint color. I've heard of Deere dealers refusing to work on Lowes models.

He bought it at Weingartz, an outdoor equipment dealer. They are a Deere dealer, but also sell many other brands. I think it's an LA135 model, and they sell it at Lowes too.
Another buddy bought a Deere garden tractor years ago. Much more expensive than a riding mower, and much beefier built too. That one had a Kawasaki engine. I wonder if the difference is the lighter duty riding mowers get the Briggs?
Lowes just sells the cheaper, lighter 100 series Deeres. Some Deere dealers sell those, some don't. The Deere dealers sell the beefier, bigger, more expensive models.

I have a JD L130
12hp-----why would you need more to cut the grass
Even use it to pull a dead car when needed (to mow under it)

Depends on how much grass you got to cut. 12 horse won't power a 60 inch cutting deck.:D
