I went to pull my 72 out of the garage and the brake pedal went to the floor. I opened the top of the master cylinder and fluid poured out of the rear resovoir. The front resovoir was very low. i topped it off and pulled some out of the other and the brakes work ok but theres several inches of play in the padal before it starts stopping. What do u think might have done this? Why do i have play in the pedal now?

do you mean that it poured out where the master connects to the power booster? If so, your secondary seal on the piston is bad letting it leak. I cant answer your other questions now cause I'm having a brain spasm.

It poured out of the rear resovoir and the front resovoir was almost empty. I filled up the almost empty one and the brakes work ok but theres several inches of play in the pedal now.

better go through the brake system, if the front was empty you probably blew something up front, could be a line, hose, wheel cylinder or caliper, etc..check around the car first for leaks. You probably got air in the system which is why the pedal is low. If the pedal goes to the floor and there are no external leaks then the master cylinder is bad.
