I have a 68 with 4-wheel power drums. My MC is not original as it has bleeding ports. I got my car with the brakes working fine (I thought), the first time I hit the brakes, the cylinders started leaking. I've replaced the rear cylinders, and rebuilt the front. I have no leaks. I bled the system out and it now has fairly clean fluid in it. But try as I might, I can't seem to get the rear brakes to bleed properly. They will bleed with pedal pressure, but when I test them they feel soft. The front brakes seem to be working, and they bled easily with gravity. One thing I noticed was that the front brake resevoir fluid level might have been dropping while I was bleeding the rear brakes. Is this a sure sign that the MC needs to be rebuilt? Even so, why would it make the brakes soft?

Been around and around the brakes about 4 times now. I need advice.

If the front res was leaking while bleeding the rear, you either have a really bad m/c or you hooked the front res to the rear brakes. Try it agian and see for sure if this is happening.

MarkM,

The rear resevoir fluid was going down while bleeding the rear brakes, as usual. But ALSO (at the same time) the front resevoir fluid seemed to drop a little bit. I'm pretty sure about this as it happened twice.

You should bleed from the farthest back to the MC. Right Rear, Left Rear, Right Front, Left Front.

Start by bleeding the MC first just to insure there is no air in it. then bleed with the sequence I listed above. also it a long way to the wheel cylinders in the rear, so do it several times to insure any air up front makes it out the rear wheel cylinders. if this doesn't fix the problem look for faulty parts that might me leaking.

OK, and thanks. I didn't get to the brakes this weekend, as my heater core blew and puked all my engine coolant into the front carpet. I'll try re-bleeding in the order you recommend next time.
