i have a 71 454 el camino and have converted the original power drums to disc brakes using all OEM parts. i am considering changing out the rear drums to disc. i have seen a guy with a backing plate bracket on ebay that will allow for more modern calipers and rotors, etc. even points out the inclusion of the e-brake in the caddy rear calipers. the question is, has anyone done this conversion. if so what did you use for parts? what problems should be anticipated in doing the swap?? obviously i have seen the "kits" available in the $800.00 range, but there must be a better way.
thanks for the help.

yes i used the bracket from the guy on ebay. i love it. i use the camaro front calipers with out the parking brake and use a pinion mounted disc parking brake. check it out. on this page i had to modify a set because i use new aftermarket axles and i needed a different back spacing. you should not have to do that, just use the brackets as they come.
i can get you a parking brake kit if you are intrested. for either a 12 bolt or a 10 bolt. i am the only one making these that i am aware of for chevy 10 and 12 bolt rears.

A friend of mine used rear disc setup from an s-10 blazer with 4 wheel discs i believe it may be harder to find and you might be better off going with the brackets from e-bay. you could probably get the s-10 setup from a chevy dealer or junk yard might be worth looking into also. just a thought

I bought the rear disc setup, brackets, rotors and calipers off of an 81 Eldorado from a guy who had a few of them sitting in his yard for $40. I had to plug and redrill the brackets for the chevy housing ends. I made a jig to do it accurately. I'm still in the frame off mode but it looks good. Hope it works as well!!!!

I've found two on e-aby worth considering;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=42605&item=2459225639&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT

Can't decide which I prefer myself other than caliper positioning preference. ie. 12o'clock vs 2.

What do you guys think???

thanks for all the help. greatly appreciated. please don;t even think that getting additional info on a thread is "highjacking" it. all the info is valuable, even the answer to additional questions.

once again, thanks!
