Hey Guys,

I purchased a new booster and master cylinder, and all was well. Last week my mechanic messed with the timing on my new motor, and during the week while driving I Noticed my brake pedal became hard and the car was having a tuff time stopping.

Today, i got a chance to get back in the car and I took it for a little ride and all was well. Once I got the car to normal operating temperature I noticed the pedal became hard once again and the velle was having a tuff time stopping once again.

I checked the vacuum from the hose and the little plug that goes into the booster and it was sucking up the air from the manifold like a vacuum machine would.

I plug the sucker back into the booster and I begin messing with the brake pedal (Stepping on it and letting off, stepping on it and letting off) when something (What I Don't Know) snapped and my pedal now feels real loose however it does not touch the floor. The brake lights are also on now when you take your foot off the pedal. What did I brake?

Steve ,
Not sure but it sounds like the spring inside the booster may have broke or maybe the pedal return spring under dash if you have one? Usually though when the pedal gets hard to push down and the car is hard to stop it is a low vacuum problem.Do you have a vacuum gauge? If so it needs to be reading at least 14-15" for the booster to work properly.

Wow, Is this Jimmy my Vice President?

No, I need to get a vacuum gauge now, and if its a spring (that doesn't sound good). Guess that thing needs to be taken apart. I will have to get a hold of one of the guys for that. That isn't my specialty.

Hi Steven,Reading your thread, it sounds to me that either the spring inside the booster broke or one of the springs inside the master cylinder broke.I just finished rebuilding my brake system in my yellow 68'(NOM)(See Sig Pics). That project started by me only looking to change the 2 lines from the M/C to the dist. block from oem to stainless. After putting them on I had a hard petal and the car lost it's braking power. So I replaced the M/C,Lines,the flex line over the 12 bolt ( old one was clogged),and wheel cylinders, new rear shoes, and had the rear drums resurfaced. Now it can put you through the windsheild it you hit it hard enough.Brakes are not to be taken lightly. When you need them, they better be there.Cars 30 years and older need to have the ENTIRE brake system renewed.Unless you are a purist,go with the stainless lines through out. It's money well spent.

P.S. Tell Lil Bro Brian I said Hi!

Hey Howard, Thanks for the information. The weird thing is the Master cylinder and booster are new along with the proportioning valve and the the lines were also changed from the proportioning valve to the cylinder and also to the disc brakes.

I will have to fix the spring issue first then go back to the lines. (Brakes we need) lol.

Thanks again.
