: car dies when slam on brakes
67lemanster Mar 11th, 05, 9:15 AM Well that sums it up. i have a 383 with a holley/proform 750 dp. under hard braking the car want to die. i have posted this in another board and have tried the following tricks.
lower float bowls.
add bowl baffle from holley(my carb had them).
raise rear float bowl and run a tube from front to rear bowl vents.
any other ideas on what to do. car stops great as a matter of fact so great the car wants to die. it seems like the motor is loading up with fuel. any and all help appreciated. thanks tommy
sinned Mar 11th, 05, 9:33 AM You guessed it. Big problem on road courses. Sounds like you have already tried most of the common tricks, it's just one of those Holley symptoms. There are some bowls out that are foam baffled to try and prevent slosh, may be worth looking into, I am going to to fuel injection for this among other reasons.

Power brakes? no manual brakes. hey dennis have you heard of a pod that holley sells that fits on the side of the carb. i guess it is vacuum operated and when you have vacuum, ie: off the throttle and on the brakes, it gives you extra throttle? i will look into the foam baffles. i would in reality only need one on the rear, correct since it is sloshing towards the carb. thanks tommy
sinned Mar 11th, 05, 12:14 PM Yeah, the secondaries are your problem. I haven't seen the step up pod you referred to. I bump the idle speed to about 1500RPM when running HPDE.
kmkchris1 Mar 13th, 05, 4:27 PM I have the same problem, engine tries to die when under HARD breaking. I have a Holley 750 also. What I do though is just pop the car into neutral and give it a couple quick blips and that works fine.
chevry Mar 13th, 05, 7:15 PM We used to call that a Dashpot. Vacuum holds it off, when vacuum drops it steps the throttle up slightly... found on a lot of old 4cy cars.... old.
You might also try anything which might decrease front end dive during braking, or change to a shorter transmission mount, keeping the carb slightly more level during braking... or use a Quadrajet :D
sinned Mar 13th, 05, 7:57 PM Chvry, some good tips however in HPDE situations under hard braking vaccum is high so the dashpot wouldn't come on.
It's not a front-end dive or engine angle problem, under severe braking the G forces acting on the fuel in the float bowl cause it to spill into the engine flooding it out and causing the die out concern.
Agreed, a good quadrabog will deter the engine from stalling at hard stops.

67lemanster Mar 14th, 05, 2:35 PM believe it or not i went back to the drawing board. i lowered the rear float bowl a lot lower than what is recommended, about 1/18" below the hole and so far i cant stall if i try. it does not seem to have bothered full throttle romps. car still pulls great and is still frying the tires at a 30 mph punch. i will keep an eye on it.
Furious Malibu Mar 14th, 05, 4:43 PM Try using the e-brake... ;)
I had that problem on a Holley as well. I swapped to a Carter and it went away completely but I never did determine what was the real cause other than verifying it was carb related.
