I have a 68 El Camino , I put new brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware kits, had all drums turned, all new tires front and rear, and I too the Elky out for its first test run , and it has a bad shake at 25 mph and gets worse with acceleration to 30 or 35 mph. So I checked the front end tie rods for movement, they pivot as supposed to without movement up and down. I installed all new inner and outer wheel bearings (both sides) and new seals, took it out for another test run and it still has the same bad shake at te steering wheel. What could this problem be ?? Bad ball joints maybe ?? Thanks,Mark

Wheels properly balanced? Bent rim? Try switching the rear wheels to the front and see if the problem "moves". I recently had two bent rims on my Chevelle which caused that problem and a noticable "waddle" when driving slowly in traffic. Could even be a defective tire, even if they're new.

Jerry, It did it before I changed and put new tires on it an on the new tires it could not be any better balanced because they have the best machine in the valley. They have balanced both new tires on the same steel chrome rims with a 100 % true balance. Thats with wheel weights on both the inside and outside of each wheel, thats called a full balance. Some guys dont want wheel weights on the outsides of their nice wheels, and I dont blame them, but thats called a half balance. I know the new tires are not defective because it did tis before I got them and put them on the other night. Its defenitley got to be a front end part I would say,but what ?????? Mark

The fact that the vibration/shaking is speed related points usually points to a wheel problem...bearings, warped rotor/drum, etc. I've had centerlinks cause this problem, but only after hitting a bump or crack in the road. Worn balljoints will usually cause the car to wander. Get someone to ride along you and observe the wheels/tires when you reach the critcial speed. Maybe they can spot something going on while you're driving. How many miles on the balljoints and steering components?

Have you checked the wheels and tires for roundness? Some years back someone posted here the problems they were having with the roundness of the chrome wheels.

I know the wheels and tires have to be true because I even put the two front tires and wheels on from my 68 Chevelle and the front end still shook te same ,no difference. And I know theres no problem there . Isnt there any front end alinement guys out there that could ring in on this problem ??? I am going to have my neighbor check it this weekend , he used to have a station and inspect cars. Thanks,Mark

Sounds to me like the wheel bearings might not be tight enough, check for slop. Jack one wheel up and try to wobble it back and forth there should be no slop. Never had a bad alignment cause vibration.
