I need to put 4 new shocks on my 1967 convertible.
What have you guys run and how'd you like em. I drive my car 20-25k a year so I'm looking for great handling and a compliant ride (you know, the best of both worlds).
Has anyone used the KYB Gas-A-Just?
What about the Eldebrock? They make two; the IAS and the Classic?
Anyone?
All the details of my car are below in my signature.
Thanks,
Dennis
PS - Where's the best deal on shocks, too.

I don't know if they make them for GM A-bodies, but I've had Tokico's on two of my vehicles now and am happy with them.

They are OE equipment on '01 Bullitt's and Mach 1's for you "not out of the closet" ford freaks here...I know you're out there! ;)

I have the good old Monroe shocks on my 70, and the AC Delco replacements on my 69. Both handle well for normal road driving. I have no complaints about them.

Don't mess around...go with the E-Brocks. The IAS's are a darn good shock. The classics, I believe are valved the same, just a gray 'classic' color. They work awesome on my '71 and I could tell a huge difference from the old ones. If you got the money go with the better shock, you won't be dissappointed.

Try www.shox.com (http://www.shox.com) and see if they carry them. They ask for your car info and send you an email with a lot of different options/prices for various shocks. I ordered mine from Summit I think, but I've done a lot of business with shox.com.

Gabriel. $10 each and they work fine. Just make sure the rest of your suspension is good (bushings, springs, tie rods, idler, etc.)

I like my Monroe sensatrac shocks, I think they were like $23.00 each. They give a nice smooth but not bouncy ride. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Well we've got some very different opinions here, eh?
Some of you guys just buy a standard replacement shock and others opt for the high dollar units.
I wonder about who's using what. Are you guys running the stock replacment type, more of the restoration typs and less all out performance, and the guys buying the high dollar units; are you guys more all out performance and less about the perfectly stock restoration.
I see from his link that onebad66 uses his at the strip. Probably doesn't care as much as I do about everyday ride and cornering. Not a lot of info from you other guys.
Just wondering.

I know the Edelbrock IAS shocks are good for handling but how are they for launches?

I, personally, prefer the handling aspect. I'm running Ebrocks on the Chevelle and Bilsteins on my daily driver. I like the firmer ride and handling of them. I chose the Bils. for the Camaro, but that has yet to see the road :( . I would have gotten the Ebrocks for the Camaro, but I had the Bils. already.

You drive lots of miles a year and a lifetime warranty would help my decision. Not sure of the warranties of the other manufacturers, tho.

I'm running KYB Gas-A-Just, but I would love to be able to afford to step up to a set of Koni's ... either way, for the money, you can't go wrong with the KYB's (~$27ish at Summit Racing).

I have the tokiko's front and rear on my wagon. On the front where the shock goes thru the lower control arm I had to take a rotary file and remove a little material to get them thru the hole. On the rear I had to do the same for the lower mounting bolt/stud. I am fixing to change the tokiko's in the rear though, they seem real soft and the rear is bouncy. I am going to try the gabriel with coil assist on the rear now. I hope they are better.

Tokico doesn't list a shock for my year so their out. They only go back to 68 in the Chevelles.

Don't really have an answer for ya. They probably react like a nice firm shock would. Drag shocks would be the way to go if that is what you're after. I can tell you the Chevelle has LESS movement (up and down) when getting on and off the gas then it used to with the Monroes that were on there. Hope that helps smile.gif ...

Where's the best place to buy the Eldebrocks?
Everywhere I've seen, they are WAY more expensive then the KYB's. I can get KYB's from Summit for about $28.00 each.

I'm always the recommender of Bilstein's smile.gif . They run about $270 or so for a set of 4 from www.shox.com (http://www.shox.com) . I run Bilstein's on my '94 Impala SS and my '71 Chevelle, which both have Hotchkis lowering springs. They are a huge difference over the KYB Gas-a-justs. Can't speak personally for the Edelbrocks, just heard they don't work with a crap on the '94-96 Impala SS's. Many of the Bilstein's for the early Camaro's will also fit the Chevelle. Lots of choices for different valving. You can even have Bilstein do a custom valving on your shocks. Oh, and they are lifetime warranty as well. Only other shock I'd buy besides Bilstein is HAL coilovers. My $0.02.

My car has airshocks with a coil over kit(helper springs) on it bc the jackass before thought it would look cool. Undoubtedly it does but I need better handling and most importantly traction. I know lowering the rear back down with any shock will improve my situation for weight transfer but I was looking for a good shock that will allow decent handling and great traction..Is that possible? Is that the Edelbrock IAS? KYB? Any ideas please

Well, I went with the KYB's and WOW.
What a completely different car. It's like someone went bumber to bumber and tightened every nut and bolt. I guess I didn't realize how bad two year old shocks could be until you put new one's on. And the old one's (Monroe Gas-Matic's) were lifetime warranted, which is now worthless because I can't find the receipt.
I bought the KYB's at Summit as they hed by far and away the best price.
I wanna go drive!! And I already drive my car A LOT.
