: Accereration...then letoff "sway"
chattanoogachoochoo Feb 27th, 03, 7:24 AM I have a 68 ss 4 speed 396/325, nice car. I have been wondering something. I don't think this is normal. When I accelerate say from 35mph to 60mph WOT, then let off, the car pulls to the left, so much that I need to account for it. The "pull" is dramatic and only occurs once I let off of throttle. The "pull" never occurs while acceleration, just when I let off of acclerator.
Is this normal? Dave
Bolzy Feb 27th, 03, 7:32 AM This happened to me not too long ago. Turned out that I lost an upper rear control arm bolt (the one on the axle) which caused the rearend to do some wierd things and the car to do what you are describing. Only it swayed on and off the gas at lower speeds. Might want to check something in that area?!?
chattanoogachoochoo Feb 27th, 03, 7:56 AM An "upper rear control arm" bolt... I don't know what this is, but I will start looking....Thanks, Dave
chattanoogachoochoo Feb 27th, 03, 8:16 AM Bolzy, Thanks for your help. I just found a diagram showing the rear suspension, upper arms and box lower arms, bushings and bolts etc. I bet you are right. If I was to replace all rear arms and bushings, how hard of a job is this? I have never worked on Rear end suspensions. Is there a trick to know, like how to put on jack stands so rear end hangs without pressure, etc?
cjlandry Feb 27th, 03, 8:38 AM Man, that's scary! A tiny pull is one thing, but when you say it's dramatic! Sounds like the kind of thing that could get someone killed! Get that problem fixed, man! Pronto!
Here's just one of many threads I found on the subject when I ran a search on "removing bushings".

Just click "search" at the upper right corner of this page and try it. There's a ton of information here.
The hardest part is removing the old bushings. Search around and I'm sure you'll find a method that you can use. The air hammer is my favorite, but not everyone has an air compressor.
There's a way to make a "press" with an all-thread rod along with some nuts, flat-washers, and short pieces of pipe or tubing.
chattanoogachoochoo Feb 27th, 03, 8:52 AM Chad, I got a compressor for christmas, have air hammer that I thought I would never use. Thanks, Dave
chattanoogachoochoo Feb 27th, 03, 8:56 AM Chad, Thanks for the "thread". Good stuff! I will get it fixed. Dave
FO_FDYFO Mar 2nd, 03, 4:30 PM sometimes you can get a responce like that if you have a posi rear and different air pressure in the right rear tire from the left rear tire.
