I have a 72 malibu that has the 8.2 10 bolt rear end in it right now. I want to find a 12 bolt to put under it. I know this is a difficult task. I also know that there are other GM cars that had 12 bolts that would fit under my 72 easily. Does anybody know of any other cars with the 12 bolt that I could stick under mine? (year and model)

I thought they stopped using the 8.2 in 70. Your 72 could have an 8.5" 10 bolt which is better than the 8.2. You can get posi units for them and they are fairly strong. There is an active thread that explains how to tell. the ring gear bolts are larger, 11/16 versus's 9/16. Any 12 bolt from 68 - 72 in any A body, including the Monte Carlo, will work but the B,O,P rears can be decieving, some had 12 bolt covers with 10 bolts inside.

The 8.5 came out in 1971, but not in the Chevelle. Very few 72 Chevelles, if any, came with the 8.5.

Also, the 8.5 takes a 3/4" wrench on the ring gear bolts, not 11/16.
