My wife wants to start using our laptop at her desk in the bedroom so I have to install a wireless router. I will stay hardwired through the new router. At present we have cable modem through a Linksys router

I know of Linksys and D Link wireless is one as good as the other or are there other brands I should consider looking at, The ads I see seem to say "N" may be better than "G" and some numbers 802.11n or g/b or 11a which mean nothing to me.

Fry's has a D-Link Extreme N Gigbite router for $100.00 the rest of the routers are about the same price.

MY ISP Is Time Warner. My Dell has a wireless card don't I need a wireless router for security

Any advice is certainty appreciated, everyone has been very helpful this last few weeks.

Thanks in Advance

I have a Belkin "G" Router. It works just fine, and cost me about $50. It accomodates 4 hard-wire cat-5s and as many wireless machines as you can imagine I guess. The "N" routers are supposed to be able to communicate faster, and maybe even more securely.

I have a Netgear, which cost around $45 when i got it and it works great.Never drops the signal and you can even use it outside of the house, but not real far.I had a Belkin before and I didn't have real good luck with it.I used to work at home often and it would lose the signal and have to be rebooted alot.

What ISP do you have? I have Verizon FiOS which requires a router that has wireless built in. I only needed to buy a wireless card for my desktop.

My wireless card is a Linksys and I'm only moderately happy with it, if that helps you at all.

Before you go an purchase one, why not check and see if your Cable company will allow you to trade in your current hardware for a combo router/hub/wireless hub???

Mine came with my Verizon package.

MY ISP Is Time Warner. My Dell has a wireless card. Don't I need a wireless router for securityYou don't need a wireless router for security, you need a wireless router for connectivity to a wireless device. Naturally you'll want to set up some sort of security with the wireless router though.

I don't know about the security aspects of wireless like WEP, RADIUS, WPA-{whatever}. My Linksys WCG200 cable gateway allows wireless plus 4 hard wire connections and I it has an area to specifically allow access by MAC address. If the MAC address of a PC, XBOX, etc. isn't in the list, it doens't get connected. Don't know if that's good enough but it seems to work for me.

I've used several of them, and I like the quality of Belkin the best.

I'm using a Belkin N Wireless Router.
It's "802.11n" compliant, excellent quality, and backwards compatible with "802.11b" and "802.11g."

I have a Linksys wireless G and a D link dns323 (external hard drive with 2 drives in a raidII setup) works great. cool part is that i can run the external directly in the wireless and the same with my printer. any computer on my network can access the external and the printer. Plus file access on the external is super fast since it does not use a USB connection. the router works very well... rarely if ever loses connection. strong signal that i can walk to the end of my driveway (the house i live in has cement walls too).

I would reccommend either of those companies from my experience.

Wireless "g" is not as efficient as the newer wireless "n" technology.

no doubt. just waiting for a reason to buy new stuff. the new laptop is gonna be "N" so i guess to take advantage of that, the router will eventually get upgraded as well. can't really seem to keep up with computer technology.
