Hey guys,

Just wondering which alternator I need for my 1970 SS454 Chevelle. Down the road I will probably have an aftermarket sound system in it, but for now I just want to get it on the road.

41 Amp

or

55 Amp

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Where is the 63amp or 105 amp option?:D

I did this conversion.

Same here I went with the CS 130. Best move I ever made. Lots of charging power at LOW engine RPMs so the dual electric fans don't run off the battery. I installed the unit on a long water pump 454 using stock parts with a tiny 'O" ring spacer on one bolt in order to alight the pulleys perfectly. About as close to a bolt on ya can get.

Note: I said A PHYSICAL bolt on. You really have to upgrade some wires under the hood because if you don't the CS 130 at 100+ ampos can supply MORE JUICE than the old small output alternator wires can handle. Look at MAD electrical for the "new System" diagrams that are supplied on the MAD site. The instructions are nice and clear and the conversion works as advertised. MAD can even supply you with upgraded wires and terminal ends and mostly EVERYTHING cept the CS130.

I will probably go that route down the road, how do I know what it would have been stock?

You can use either one of those alts.

I would go to the local Autozone, Pepboys, or Napa and buy a 63amp. The plugs and physical dimensions are the same.

since you are getting a new alternator now, you might as well upgrade and be done with it. your car will actually run better due to the extra power output.
personally, i'd skip right past the SI alts and go straight to a CS series alternator- i used one for an 88 or 89 (or maybe it was a 90) Grand Am with a 2.5 in my Nova. it bolts right into the stock brackets (but with a metric bolt on the top bracket) and it's easy to either get a junkyard plug to work or get a plug in adapter. just run a big wire from the terminal on the back of the alt directly to the "+" terminal on the battery so you don't have to worry about melting your horn relay.

here is the NAPA listing for an 89 Grand Am:

and i just remembered that i had to move the upper alt bracket down a little bit for it to bolt up, but it wasn't anything major. also, you have to swap your V belt pulley onto this alt.
