I have to get a longer driveshaft for my elco. I know I need to put the yoke in the trans, then pull it out and measure from that point. How far do I pull it out to get my measurement?

Here is a link to how to measure for a driveshaft!:)

I put the car up on jackstands, with the suspension compressed, push the slip yoke all the way in, and measure from center to center of the u-joint caps. Take that measurement and subtract 1" from it. So if you get 55.5", you will want a 54.5" shaft C to C.

yea, i was gonna say why pull it out unless you had to go grab a beer, lol
with the rear hanging loose, that is usually the postion that the rear is closest to the trans, as it gets compressed, it moves back about 1/2"-i take meas. both with rear loose and conpressed, but usually it ends up being around 3/4" out or so-i like max. penatration, but able to rem it with the rear hanging loose

Talk to your driveshaft shop. The guy I use has done a couple for me, and all I do is measure from the rear seal facing on the tailshaft to the bearing saddles on the pinion yoke. I take hime the shaft and the yoke, he does the calculating and takes it from there.
