: Wierd home theater audio problem....help!!

I've pieced together a "home theater" piece by piece. The TV is a Samsung LN-T4061F. The problem is there seems to be a delay in the audio, or the video, or both.

I used to have a really old stereo hooked to it, so I used the TV's audio out to connect to the only input on the stereo. I had the old TV hooked this way too, without problems. The stereo sucked, so sometimes I would use the stereo, as well as turn up the TV speakers to make it sound better. This worked fine with the old Sony 27", but not with the new Samsung. There's some sort of delay, that causes the sound from the stereo to be out of sync with the TV's audio, and causes a wierd and very annoying "echo" effect.

I thought this might have to do with using the TV's audio out. I recently got a better stereo with multiple inputs, so this time I hooked the DVD player audio to both the TV and stereo directly, rather than just to the TV, and then out to the stereo. It still has that "echo" :(

So, my guess is, the TV's audio is delayed for a few milliseconds for some reason. Why is this?? And if there's a deelay on the TV's audio, is there a delay on the video as well? I can't quite tell. I don't want to use the TV audio exclusively, cause it isn't that great. And I don't want to use the stereo if there's going to be a slight delay on the corresponding video.

Anybody else have this problem? Anything I can do about it?

Thanks....

Make sure you have your TV's internal sound set to mute and use the reciever as your sound system. That's what I had to do with my samsung DLP. Pete

Thanks Pete. That might be what I have to do, but I'd like to use both the TV and reciever audio, until I can afford decent speakers. Did your TV have the wierd delay if you didn't shut off the TV's speakers?

Yes that and the echo. I had to choose either TV audio or reciever audio could not use both. Pete

Me too, I have a 50" LG plasma TV and a newer Pionner home audio system. I just have to turn the TV volume off.

I have a center channel speaker and a pair of rear surround speakers I'd let go cheap....PM me if you're interested.

I had this problem before I started using HDMI.

Before, I had the analog l/r outputs from components going to the TV, with the digital output from components going to the audio reciever, and there was a delay/echo. Now, I have HDMI going from the components to the TV, and a single digital audio output from the TV going to the reciever. Works great now.

Most digital receivers have a delay -- don't know why since the audio and video are integrated into the same signal with digital TV. It must be due to the processors in the newer receivers. My Sony STR DG-910 receiver actually provides a feature that allows you to sync the audio by either advancing or delaying in small increments until you get them synced together.

So does my Onkyo TX-SR805. I have the Mirage Nano Speaker system and everything is hooked up on HDMI. I've never had to do any audio sync adjustments, and I never use the volume controls on my Sharp Aquos 46" LCD.

I found some information on the "lip sync error" that may be of interest:

Well, thanks for the help guys! I didn't realize that this was an issue for others as well, I thought it migth have been more specific to my TV. I poked around on google, and it seems that this is sort of a common problem for new TV's in general, because of the video processing time. Sounds like the only "true" fix is to delay the audio, either with an external box like posted above, or some TV's or receivers can add the delay without an external box. In my case, the TV is a cheaper one, and the receiver is a really cheap one, so no dice. I'll either have to stop using the TV's speakers and live with the video/audio sync error, or add an external delay.

Really though, I think this is a really stupid problem to have. If TV mfg's know that this is an issue (which they do) why wouldn't they provide an audio output that is delayed the same as the internal speakers? You'd simply hook that to your receiver, and that's it.
