How do I find out what motor and tranny my 71' Chevelle came with? The build code tag under the hood: ST 71-13437 L 01670 BDY TR 724 26 26 PNT 04E 750074 290212

Hey i noticed you had no replies so i figured i would give you a hand. What a lot of people dont' know is you can actually call you locall part store and give them your 8TH digit on the vin number and tell them what year make and model the vehicle is and give them that letter or number i believe it shoudl be a letter and they can tell you what engine came in the vehicle. As far as transmission take those number you gave out and go to google with them and type in Chevelle Body Tag Break Down or something similar to those lines such as Body Codes or Tags or VIN Breakdown just things like that will tell you. But you local Advance Auto Part sor Auto Zone they would know believe it or not. Thats how i used to find out the engine sizes of people who did not know.

Cliff, go to this site for more help[ http://www.chevellestuff.com/1971/vin.htm

Trim Tag example for your car
http://www.chevellestuff.com/1971/chevelle/tags/71-l.htm

Eighth through Thirteenth Digits: Sequential Production Number and will not tell you what motor or transmission the car came with. I wish we could go down to the local parts house and find out what motor it original came with, but nothing in the vin or the trim tag for 70 and 71 will tell you that. In 72 the vin included a letter for what motor came in the car.

D ,GM didn't use the 8th digit for engine ID until 1981.

Since it is a Chevelle, not a Malibu, we can rule out a 454. We can also rule out 6 cylinders if the VIN also starts with 13437. So it would probably be a smallblock V8. There is probably enough evidence in the body to tell what transmission it originally had.

Are the door trim panels on that car? And are they original? I think you may just have yourself a Heavy Chevy.

The VIN on a '71 Heavy Chevy starts with 13437, while the VIN on a V8 Malibu or SS coupe starts with 13637.
here is mine

I found my build sheet on top of the gas tank
