I just found a line on an LS1 vett engine, 468 miles on the engine, computer, and all excesories... $5500. Engine was pulled to drop in a Z06, car was never driven much. IS this a good eal on an LS1 ?? If so what mild mods can be made, ie bolt ons to pop the pony's over 400??

I'd say no... granted it's "fresh" but if you don't mind an engine with some miles on it, you can get into a complete F-body LS1 for $1500, or under $3k with a T56 attached.

Bolts ons such as a cold-air intake, exhaust, and a computer re-tune. imo, i would look at blackbear tuning for a computer tune, he is very good at what he does. if that motor doesn't work out, also look for the trailblazer ss motors, there are a lot of them around, and there the newer ls2 style. good luck

seems high for an LS1. You can get an LS2 and trans for about the same price.

468 miles? Is it out of a C6? If so it is a LS2 or LS3.

IMO, the later 07-up truck engines are a way better value than the older LS1 motors. The Vette stuff is still expensive.

Something like this is cheaper and has more power potential without taking the heads off.

They are also very plentiful at salvage yards. Meaning you get some kind of guarantee on the condition of the motor. Better than someones word that it only has 500 miles on it.

We have brand new in the crate 6.0 litre 367HP L76 motors for $4K! Cannot compare the LS1 to the new version LS motors. The new heads are incredible. Add a cam and get 100 horse! For real!

A Z06 Corvette should have an LS6 motor. Did this motor come out of a Z06 or were they going to put it in a Z06?
Prices on these motors have come down. You should be able to get an complete LS1 with a tranny bolted to it for around $3000 or less. Chances are it won't have 468 miles on it, but the $2500 you save will cover the costs to swap it in.

Keep an eye out on your local Camaro forums. I bought a complete 98 LS1 with big valves/ported heads off of my local board for $475. It spun #6 rod bearing, but I picked up a complete rotating assembly and another set of heads for $150. I can sell my old rotating assembly and one of the sets of heads and get about $200 back. I can put bearings/rings/seals and rod bolts in for about $500. By the time that I order a cam/valve springs, I will have about $1500 total in a rebuilt engine with a cam of my choice and ported heads.

local junkyard had a 5.3. 150 bucks pulled. complete.

i would buy a junkyard 6.0. you can get them with harness and computer, all accessories, and sometimes even a trans for 1600 tops.

5k is too much. you can buy a complete running 5spd lower miles ls1 fbody for 5k now-a-days.

dont be fooled by the "ls6". if you want an "ls6" you can buy a regular ls1, put an ls6 cam in it, and ls2 heads on it for half the price.
the ls2 heads are 243 casting, same as the ls6, but has sodium valves. and they are 325 each assembled from GM. ls6 heads are 650ea assembled for the same head...
i would personally buy a junkyard 6.0 for about 400 bucks, and put a set of l92 heads (350ea assembled from gm) on it, junkyard harness and computer from a truck, and be done. all for wayy less than 2k.with a small 22x-23x duration cam it will make around 420-450whp.

edit..

you will not see 400whp with bolt ons in an ls1.
my friends ls6 (01) makes 350whp with cat back and air box.
his t/a makes 370whp with 232/236 cam, headers, exhaust, tune, cai.

I agree with you Aaron. If I were to buy mine over again, I would buy a 6.0L or LS2 short block, L92 heads and a good cam and make over 450 rwhp for less than 2k.

If I were you I'd go straight to Frank at Prodigy and grab the brand new motor he posted above. That's a screaming deal and it is fresh right out of the crate. Plus you will get top notch customer service to boot!

umm, actually, you can make 400 hp with bolt ons, my silverado ss is proof.. cai, tune, exhaust, headers..it can be done, actually, truth be told, i'm also doing the tbss intake and 90mm throttle body swap, so that'll push me to 410-420.

your ss has a 6.0 in it.
and your talking to the wheels?

personally the highest bolt on car i seen personally was 370whp, and 407whp with an ms3 cam. and this is through a 6spd..
the tbss intake is an l76?

I am picking up from friend of mine a LS2 out of a 2006 Trailblazer SS complete with harness and ecu for $2500. I am going to make a few changes to it and swap it into my chevelle as well this winter with the TKO600 behind it.

I am pretty excited to get it going, my wifes 2007 Trailblazer SS is an absolute blast to drive bone stock, I can't imagine what that LS2 would feel like with some modifiying and dropped into the chevelle.

Thanks guys, I think its an LS1, or was told it was. Just looking for a good deal on an engine for my pro touring dream. Though i have do admit i'm torn between a Fuel Injected BBC and the LS engines.

I have looked at the same debate. The power and economy the Gen3/4 motors make it hard to argue against. Also the LS comes setup for EFI, you would have to add everyting on to a BBC. I will agree nothing looks like a BBC in a Chevelle.

My Ls1 turned 436rwhp/415 rwtq on a mild 228/230 112+4 Futral cam with TEA stg 2 ported 5.3 truck heads and a LS6 intake. A FAST intake with 90mm tb would be good for ~450rwhp. The setup in a C5 turned 31mpg driving from Atlanta to Orlando and 29 on the way back. A run to Bowling Green and back was also 29mpg. I was running a 6 speed and stock 3.42 gears. The mid year guys also loved the sound with headers, no cats and GHL mufflers. It really hooked me on the new motors.

I would take a look at the LQ4/LQ9 6.0s. Also be sure to add the cost of accessory brackets and intake into whatever you buy. Run some searches on Ls1tech to figure what direction you want to take the motor, you can find planty of info. I want to run a ECM setup for a cable TB when I do the swap in place of the fly by wire. IMO the response is a little better. Just a few things to think about and read.

Are you doing the swap in the black vert in your profile? Very good looking car.

OK after doing alot of reading on diff forums i have decided the best bang for the buck will be a LQ4 6.0 engine, L92 heads, and good cam, and a aftermarket LS intake. Should hit the 500 mark at the crank. Thats the plan anyway.

I picked up a wrecked 2001 Camaro for around $1800 ($500 in yard fees) and was able to part out about $800 so far for the seats, sensors, suspension, etc. It was nice having the whole car because I was able to take my time and label everything when I was taking it apart. There are deals out there. If you have the time, just be patient and watch ebay, craigslist, etc. If you need it now, you will pay a little more. I've been driving my LS1 Chevelle for about 50 miles now and I absolutely love it. Good luck!
