have a 66 chevelle with 373 posi 12 bolt rearend and the problem i have is with the air shocks and the type of ride it has. it feels like i am riding in a rack body truck bouncing around. If i change to gas vs air will the ride be more like a car and if so is it necessary to change the springs at the same time? I only have 50lb of air in them now and the ride is ruff. Thanks for the help.

Air shocks do not have any real dampening. Air shocks are designed to carry a load. Put pressure in, raise the car. A gas shock is designed to dampen the spring. The gas charge puts pressure aginst the oil. On a twin tube shock, Monroe, Gabriel etc the presure helps to prevent the oil from foaming. The gas is added to the oil reservoir and under hard use they will eventually mix. On a mono tube design, Bilstein, Edelbrock etc the gas is seperated by a floating piston. The gas will never mix with the oil. A mono tube is a better design. That is why they typicaly are 2-3 times more expensive.

Thanks a lot, so I just picked up a set of Monroe gas sensatracs so it should be better. Now my concern is the height of the rear because I have a deep dish crager in the rear and the tire on one side rubs the quarter panel wheel well. If I change the springs will that help to maintain the height? :(

Jhunt;I have new springs for the 66 station wagon application on the rear of my malibu and they gave me a good 2 inches of lift over the stock springs that were on there, but then again I assume the stock ones were 35 years old when i did this also.Any way I have 275 60-15's on 15x8 wheels with 4-1/2 in. backspacing and have a good 1/2 in. fenderwell clearance inside and out.The car has a BB 402and also has new stock BB springs in front with 235-60-15's on 15x8 wheels and the rear sits about 1-1/2-2 inches higher in the rear,Just about the right stance for me.Hope this helps some.Good Luck.Tony P.s. No tire rub at all.
