Did all 67 consoles get the seat belt holders or only were they optional?

Tom

I believe that we do not have a definitive answer on this question, other than to say.. NO.. they did not ALL get the seat belt holders. WHY? which did? when ? etc., I don't know. At some point it appears that 67 4 speed consoles and auto consoles got these seatbelt holder/clips.. but I don't know if any of us have come up with anything conclusive.

It may be that DELUXE style seat belts got the clips but not the standard belts?

I welcome any additional comment as well.

Mike

You also didn't say whether you car has Deluxe seat belts or Standard? Also , when trying to make deductions as this, we have to be able to know to a certain dg whether the seatbelts in the car now are ORIGINAL, as well as the Console.

I believe you can Buy the CLIPS for your console... but you would need to see an original clip console for where exactly to drill the holes.

they are the original old ratty looking seat belts unfortunately. the console is original and it shows it too. am not sure what exactly "deluxe belts" are as I have never found a build sheet (yet). can you clarify o' chevelle guru of gurus (mike) ?

my friend in town has a 66ss that has the clips on it so I could just go measure his for the location. have no doubt his console is original too. his is an original L78 (4sp of course) bought by his dad.

My July built 67 has the the seat belt clips on the center console and it has standard seat belts. Original set up and bought from the original owner. Kansas City built Chevelle.
So if the determining factor is not the early or late built, Is not the Standard or deluxe seat belts, Could it be the location where built?

The DELUXE Style seat belt has the Brushed Steel Buckle with Carriage on it, as oppossed to the Standard Style Hard Plastic. I do not have a close up photo with me here, but you may be able to see it on my web site under the INTERIOR Drop Down tab.

If your friend has a 66 SS Console with seat belt clips, I would say he has an anomaly or VERY Late car some how getting a 67 Console.. as I do not believe any 66 SS received Seatbelt clips as a General practice, so that would be very odd... but that is a whole other discussion that we can get bogged down with.., yes, that would be the way to get the measurements you need.

The problem with such things is verification of Originality... short of having a True Survivor car to verify the console and seatbelts.. it's sometimes hard to know for sure that a console was not changed at some point over the years..and yet, I know many of us " JUST KNOW" that the car's console is original, sometimes it is as said.. you can look at it and see it is original.

mine is not deluxe belts. thanks mike.

will have to go take a closer look at that 66ss and see where/when it was built. most of the chevelles down here were atlanta built though. will also talk to his dad who has been hording chevelles in his back yard since the 60's (you ought to see it). his dad did special order the car from bill heard chevrolet in columbus ga. with the L78 in it so maybe it was an option at the time..??..
got to love these old cars....

1967 AIM shows the seat belt retainers making no distinction between deluxe or standard belts or transmission type.

UPC D55/A2 ~ FRONT COMPARTMENT FLOOR CONSOLE - CONSOLE (USED WITH RPO M35 - M40) [6-26-66 redrawn & redesigned]

...and...

UPC D55/A5 ~ FRONT COMPARTMENT FLOOR CONSOLE - WIRING (EXCEPT RPO M35 - M40) [redrawn & redesigned date unreadable]

Both show the retainers. Those with automatics (sheet A2) are shown on the sides of the console and those with manuals (sheet A5) are shown on the top of the console between compartment door and shifter cutout.

Like Mike says, it seems to be hit & miss and there are probably not enough true survivors left out there with a good variety of dates and plants to make YES the correct answer to 'did all get them?' The second question you have about the being optional? No, they weren't an option as such.

As I'm sure Mike has, I've seen enough 'restored' 67s without the reatiners that one would be hard pressed to think all these 67s had 66 consoles in them. :noway:

I've had numerous 67s and all that had consoles had the retainers but I'd hardly base a conclusion on 4 or 5 cars since it's apparent others have 67s without the retainers.

Regardless, I'd say if you want to be 'correct' and have evidence in your favor in light of the AIM saying consoles came with retainers. I'd include them at least until someone comes up with some documentation that says they DIDN'T have them at some time from specific plants. It's like the side stripes the AIM says came on all SS396 cars but many claim their's never had. The stripes are shown in sales brochures as well as the AIM.

The 4-speed console is shown with color coordinated hard plastic belt buckles (standard seat belts) and automatic console with deluxe buckles.

Good information Dale added here... I will add this as we continue to weed through it all:

Me personally.. when judging a 67 in a restored to original class.. I would not deduct any points for a 67 Not having the clips. That is just me.

Different strokes for different folks. It would depend on what is within the boundaries of the guidelines. Me, for a restored to original class, I'd deduct for anything that has documentation showing what should be, not what is be it wrong engine parts, wrong trim, wrong wheels, wrong dash, etc. unless guidelines stated any specific aforementioned parts or mods were acceptable.

Here is a pic of my center '67 center console....
I was told it was original with the seat belt holders, but who really knows after 44 years! I haven't seen any others with it myself, so it's pretty cool to actually have it. Ernie

I bought mine from Luttys (http://www.luttyschevy.com/newcatalogs/1966-67%20chevelle.pdf) but I would think just about everyone would have them
