Hello to all of you here at Chevelle Tech. I just joined.

I've been a member at Camaro Tech for over a year now and although it's a wealth of info over there I was told to seek out Jim who is a former saginaw engineer.

My problem is I'm trying to do a p/s conversion on my 67 camaro. I have a 70-1/2 LT-1 350 Z28 motor but I used my stock short water pump. I'm using a 85 Z28 fast ratio 2-1/2 turns steering box w/out being in car. It's not the IROC box but should work pretty good. Now I'm running into trouble trying to get the right pump - brackets and the right crank pulley to make this work.

My question for Jim is was it just after a certain date that all p/s pumps gave enough pressure for these s/boxes or just certain pumps? Would it be too much trouble to get the 85 Z/28 p/s pump to work on my car?

Does anyone else have info that can get me the right setup to get this done with either the older pumps or the 85 Z/28 pump? Thanks

Since I posted this I read your corvette url on this subject. It didn't answer all my questions I could still use your help. Thanks

Hey there Ram Jam, I'm not who your looking for but I may be able to give you some insight to your problem. For all purposes the pump on the 85 Camaro will bolt to the original P/S brackets your car currently uses. The only thing that you will need to address is the pulley, because the 85 pump uses a press on style of pulley and the pump pulley on the 67 will be of the keyway style with a locking nut. I believe, this is because I'm changing my 68 chevelle to a long water pump brackets, that the pulley spacing of the power steering pulley is the same between the long and the short pump set up, at least that what I've gotten from the GM parts book. GM book says that the pulley on the 68 short pump and the 69 long is the same part number, now why I 've brought all this up, you should be able to find a press on pulley from a 79 up small block powered vehicle, trucks are most likely to have single groove pulleys due to lack of A/C.

Or you could switch to a long water pump set up which is better stuff, because the engine won't toss the altenator belt at high RPM, this is what I would do.

Another point will be the Hydralic lines, the later pump will have a o-ring style fitting on the high pressure side. Two choices, custom lines that you will have to have made or make yourself, or call Lee Manufacturing in Sun Valley, Ca (sorry don't have number handy) and they make a press in piece that changes the o-ring to a flare style fitting then you will able to use the stock line for the car.

Good Luck

Hey Q,

Thanks for the help. I'll look into those pulleys and brkts. I'll call the bone yard tomorrow where I got the str/box see about the pump.

Still hope to hear from JimL82 on my other questions.

BTW: I never had a problem with tossing the alt belt at high rpm's or is that something that happens after you install p/steering? hope not
