kettbo Jun 21st, 09, 3:12 PM Anybody interested?

I have slicks laid on either day..... This will be my assault on 13.0s and besting Gotupandwent's best ET
Pinks is coming soon.....some new combinations are out there
Oh Paul......I think they are looking for 12-sec cars for Pinks....what is your plan? Will the new engine be ready
ToG...can you make it either evening?

I should have had Brett sand the nova down at Hoss's so I could throw some primer on it. I know the nova would entertain going.
1966malibu Jun 21st, 09, 5:12 PM Next weekend is the NHRA open right? That means a different schedule for TNT on Friday right? It also means the track will be packed .

kettbo Jun 21st, 09, 10:47 PM I'm thinking more about FRI than WED...simply because I already paid my fees at Bremerton. Savings for that reason alone make for another outing at Bremerton!
Weatherman says mid 70s and mostly sunny
re Gotago and his sleeping disorder in post number 2....
just gotta beat "My best pass was 13.1 at 107.84 MPH with a 2.17 60'."
so any 13.0 run, I'll own you again, at least six months. I'm all fired-up for this opportunity......
Dave Jun 21st, 09, 10:52 PM I think John is trying to come to Bremerton the weekend before. I dunno, I'd like to try to make it out there this year.
OutCast Jun 21st, 09, 10:59 PM Just checked Bremerton schedule, there isn't anything happening on the prior weekend. I could be down for the 24/25 at Bremerton. I would definitely like to get some more 1/4 mile passes in before Pinks.

kettbo Jun 21st, 09, 11:12 PM 27 and 28th are the NHRA National Open......so the 26th could be a bit of a problem....TOG right, probably swamped.... With work until 3:30...there would be no early departure and I could get hung-up there if it is busy....
hmmmm
kettbo Jun 21st, 09, 11:17 PM Good luck!! Ya got 6 months..........................
and while you are gone, the 454v2 goes together so I'll continue to own you!
454 70 Elky auto vs 69 Chevelle 427 std shift...nice match-up!
Quick 60' vs mega top-end...;)

I have a no Ifs Ands or Buts race with my friend on July 24th. THE 427 WILL BE IN!!!!! I know I can swing the 26th, I would like to try out my new drag radials

Hahahaha...most of the stuff for 454v2 is already acquired!
You are going down like the value of the dollar!
It'll be together when you get back and in the vehicle. Heck....I may have you so worn out with the Super Budget 454 that I may not even need the 454v2 to beat on you!:D
All kidding aside, I know that your little business trip starts soon. The best of luck to you. Be safe. Do good things. We'll keep you entertained here on TC and with PMs etc.

they work well on the street. They should be okay with the tired old 396 and tight converter. I'm not sure how there gonna like the 427 and ati converter

What model/stall?

I just found a used 9" that flashed 5500 behind a 620ci bbc. I'm still up in the air on converters. I love the ati's but not the price. I like the rednecks and like the price.
kettbo Jun 22nd, 09, 1:53 AM raining lile the dickens here.....
I sent COAN a worksheet...nobody has responded.....
Looking at 3000--3200 stall.....street car ya know.
Anybody use the custom converter guy up by Bremerton? Usually has ads on C-L
http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/pts/1227977811.html
I can get a B&M 2900-3200 for $320 but it does not feature some of the stuffs found in the Redneck units. Myabe Kevin will keep his 3500 and not need his 3000 unit...

Bwahahahahahahah!!!! LOL!!! :D And mark knocks one out of the park!
kettbo Jun 22nd, 09, 2:28 PM Sure, free press here.....say whatcha want Rambo. Lots of parts and options in the garage already....see the gallery, last few pics
The facts of the matter are that Mark has only been hitting foul balls with one run off error! He's got a multi million dollar bullpen for sure....they just have trouble getting on base. Meanwhile, the bush league guy is keeping the game close.
re racing:
The TnT Fri 28th....looks like it starts 11am, ends at 6pm.....
Will see what I can do to shift the work schedule around for racing FRI. Supposed to work til 330 or later... get there at 5 and end at 6 just does not sound viable.
RAMBO Jun 22nd, 09, 3:26 PM ... the bush league guy is keeping the game close.
well, He certainly can TALK the game, thats for sure. ;)
go run George & have fun! :)
I just hope my issues are resolved with my new fuel pump and tank, so i can actually get 1/4 mile runs in without major engine issues, so i can officially take the slow guy hat.

I've not commented on your status with the infamous 'slow guy' hat.
Seems you have a disability at the moment,,,,,,Olds power! Also a 3-speed manual. So two things keeping you from going fast. A 330 horse engine, right? If you smoke someone with that beast of yours.....you'll be a hero in my eyes.
Mark will undoubtably, eventually sort-out his car and his driving...and he'll be fierce. Gotta make hay with the sunshine here, get him in his formative period. My combo is already 'old news' better suited to the average TCNW car 2-3 years ago. I'll have to run low 12s NA to even be noticed with 454v2. The Elky is still plenty loud on the freeway even with the longer mufflers.
TOG,
Where did you get the addl info for this weekend?

I don't know where the idea comes from that I got a high buck motor. With parts AND machine work, I came in at about $1200. Of course Darryl saved me some bones and I'm still running Loaders carb........
Speaking of which, you got me in cubes, you bolted on all the fancy suspension parts, you ran slicks, you have a mondo carb, and I'm still faster than you:D
Shoulda dyno tuned your ride:yes:......................................... .

disability at the moment was the carb gunked up with fingertip sized peices of paint... sort of keeps the engine from running very well. Also- i'll need to learn to launch a manual tranny... But I really don't care if i'm the slowest or the fastest- i'm just out to have fun. Always have been. I'm not afraid to find out my car is slow... and being slow won't keep me from enjoying it

Admitadly, i have a short attention span, so haven't been following your build real close over the last 3 years- but why exactly do you have to build a whole new egine again? Can't you just get rid of the crappy heads and put a better cam in it? Did you go with some super lo-po slugs or something?
Everyone else is just doing cam swaps to upgrade, I just don't understand the whole "V2" build concept...
Just doesn't seem right planning a whole new engine build w/o major carnage first.
Better plan on some NOS so we can see a rod jammed through teh side of the block first. Then you'll have a REAL reason to build a better motor :D

No, not a billion dollar batting line-up, just all star parts! Should be whipping my low-buck butt here

Interesting Ben.
The Super Budget engine was a cheapie counterpoint to your crate 454HO. A daily driver engine. Also a budget/desperate attempt to get me outa last place. To get there with my (then) meager budget required use of a shortblock with usable bores and pistons. The limiting factor of the current engine is the cast stock pistons. They will last a long time if not overly abused. Run it too hard...danger zone. So, I kept the cam mild so it would nose over before the piston speed got too high. Big cam and great heads would be wasted on a low-compression engine/cast pistons.
Easy to list the engine as a runner, give test rides for max sale price or put it in the corner of the garage as a spare....then install the engine that I should have built if the cash flow had been better. Having the S-10 now sure helps!
cobaltchev67 Jun 23rd, 09, 1:40 AM I see Ben's point, and I see George's point. I think the point I like best is the time to swap would be like a day or two, break the new one in, do a little tuning if needed and drive away. George has the parts already there, and yes, recoup $$$ of the engine in there now would definitely be easier with a test drive.
FRYNTYR Jun 23rd, 09, 1:54 AM . The limiting factor of the current engine is the cast stock pistons. They will last a long time if not overly abused. Run it too hard...danger zone. !
Screw that, run the piss out of, throw a cam in it and mash it. Heck, if the skirts break off it just makes the piston lighter for higher rev's, right. :D

You know Doc, that perscription could get you a malpractice suit!
There is room for improvement...just thinking about which way to go
Yup, sell the Super Budget 454 and drop-in the follow-on engine, minimal down time.
65lkey Jun 24th, 09, 12:57 PM So I have Friday off and i'm going to try and go run on the 26th. I have to install my wheel studs, 90-10 shocks, and my new 850 and i'll be set
kettbo Jun 24th, 09, 1:07 PM I can't get my schedule changed this late. If we're busy, I'm stuck at work into the evening Friday. If slow, maybe get off at 3:30.
I called the track, TOG is correct, different schedule for Bremerton FRI 26th.
Gates open at 8am, time trials begin at 11am, lady said they will close time trials early, between 5 and 7. Long drive for maybe one pass if they close at 5....
if I work late, simply screwed....
grrrrr
65lkey Jun 26th, 09, 12:41 AM UPDATE
I'm loaded up ready to go. i'll leave at about 6:30 tomorrow mornin
kettbo Jun 26th, 09, 1:12 AM Good luck, be safe....and run a better time than my Elky.
65lkey Jun 26th, 09, 1:29 AM Good luck, be safe....and run a better time than my Elky.
I highly doubt i'm gonna run faster than my previous 13.4 but you never know. go going up and down the street the new 90-10 shocks are awesome. The 850 needs a alittle squirter work but i'll get that all dialed in at the track. the 396 doesn't seem to like the 50cc rear squirt. it has 33's front and rear, i'm thinking about dropping down to 31's front and rear
kettbo Jun 26th, 09, 1:39 AM "ALL" will depend on your launch and 60' times.
I'm thinking the 850 is too big for that 396 as it is now....however....
She might hook with the new(er) tires and the carb size a tad large... and the 90/10s maybe some 60' improvement to carry down the track for a better ET.

well first off it was friggin packed in up there. I was there for 6 hours and got 3 runs in. I got more phone numbers than passes is that gives you any idea of how bored i was, also why i haven't been posting:hurray:.
My changes were my new set of 275-60 m&h DR, set of 90-10's, and an AED 850. First pass was 13.58 @98 second pass was 13.74@98 (launched off idle) and last pass was a 13.56@99 after a jet change. I usually run 13.4x@99. My MPH stayed the same, and 60's were about the same 1.8x's
My motor didn't seem to climb through the rpms as fast, then that night it started making this noise out of the exhaust. I adjusted my valves and the number 6 exhaust was WAY loose but the poly lock was still tight. I relashed it and its made the noise quieter but now its back.
66 Buick Special Jun 29th, 09, 1:11 AM Paul, is this the same 396 that you've been running?
No cam change or anything?
Hopefully it's nothing major.
Last I heard there is a 427 that's beggin' to be built.
How was your traction? Any spinning?
At least you were out there giving 'em hell.

yup I'm still beating on the old 396. The 427 block is going to get honed tomorrow and the goal is to have the shortblock together by the 4th. I need to get in touch with a couple cam companies and see about a cam for the 427
66 Buick Special Jun 29th, 09, 1:32 AM I need to get in touch with a couple cam companies and see about a cam for the 427

I'm tired of screwing with this old 396. Its time for a change:yes:
Kevin R Jun 29th, 09, 2:28 AM Must be something wrong with the 396 Paul. The 396 I had with the 60204 cam ran 108 in the 1/4 with an 800DP. It even ran 107 with a slightly smaller comp cam and the 770SA carb.

Seems off to me too, but I was thinking more in the 60'.
If I recall correctly manual trans cars usually run 2-3 mph faster than auto's at the same ET. Even with that taken into account, you're right he's still 2-4 mph slower...

I agree. This 396 has NO top end. It has some awesome bottom end, but stops pulling at about 5k. I'm starting to think the cam is really far advanced

True but I ran 118 with the manual trans 4.56 gears and 11.96 1/4
Then with the auto 3.73 gears it ran 117 and 11.79
Not sure if the MPH for the manual was off or the auto is just that good:D
66 Buick Special Jun 29th, 09, 5:22 PM I ran 11.97@111.4mph(old cam), and 11.74@111mph (new cam) with my auto...:D
Granted, I was already off the juice and slowing down when I crossed the stripe on that second pass.;)
Kevin, your car just flat moves out in the top end.:beers:
Plus, I love listening to that 427 grab those instant rev's.
I think you and I are going to have some fun races at that 11.50 cut off.:hurray:

we'll see there greg. I just want out of the 13's. I hate getting beat by mild n/a small blocks. Granted my 396 is NOT built.

With a solid roller and lots of compression you will def be faster than 11.5:yes:
If I had optimum suspension and traction my car would already be there.

I think Kevins "fancy pants heads" are gonna kick my butt. I'll have a secret weapon....
I can run Nitrous:yes::hurray::beers:
Kevin R Jun 29th, 09, 11:25 PM Well Paul I don't think my heads are that much of an advantage. Your going to be running high compression with race gas so Im sure that's the equalizer then on top of that you will be running a solid roller which should put you faster then me no problem.

we'll see Kevin. I think its gonna be close, you car moves like a freight train once you get it rollin. I think our cars weight about the same. I think i'm going to run the xr286 this year. I can always pull it out next winter.
kettbo Jun 30th, 09, 12:25 AM Paul,
Invite me over when the 396 comes out....
I'd like to take a look inside and figure out what's what....
I'm willing to bet the engine, once the cam is pointed the right direction, will be a strong performer. This all goes back to your low cranking compression weeks ago.

I agree there. There's something screwy in there. There's the big car show on Ft. Lewis on the 4th. My dad keeps pushing me to take my car, but that noise bugs the crap out of me.
I think the 396 is gonna come out sometime around then. I have to rod a few parts off of it for the 427
kettbo Jun 30th, 09, 12:41 AM If you need some support before the 24th, let me know.
Maybe 'fix' the 396 as a contingency plan if it is healthy inside/
What is this 'noise' you refer to?
If the 396 needs surgery, or it is terminal, I also have 'a few' things around the garage, just in case a shipment does not arrive, other 'oh SH$T!' type thing happens.

no the 427's going in for the 24th, no ifs ands or butts. The only problems I foresee is if any of the clearances are wacked out.
as for the 396 it has a weird popping out of the exhaust. It almost sounds like its inhaling through the exhaust. It makes the car sound like crap

Checked your rockers lately? Because that sounds like what TW is doing right now with a few loose rockers.

Paul had very low compression across the board.
Perhaps "loose screws" but certainly not loose rockers.
