CE signifies Chevy Engine- usually a warranty replacement or purchased at the parts counter.
This one would be from 1971.
Did you get the casting number or casting date ?

CE167162 is a replacement, it came thur the parts department. CE were never complete engines, they were partial engines. Replaced only what was damaged. i.e. short block with pistons and crank, no heads or other parts, transfer from existing engine if good. Complete engine would have a normal suffix but those were rare in use. Most all bad engines had parts that were salvageable and could be reused to save costs.

CE - Chevrolet Engine (PE - Pontiac Engine etc)
1 - Made during 1971 engine production run (for any vehicle, sold by part number)
67162 - Sequential engine serial number, Tonawanda engine plant range was 50,000 to 79,000 serial sequence assigned

Note - Its possible and highly likely depending on the model year that the replacement CE was of newer design and is not exactly as original, could be different casting.

In addition, all "396" engines from late 1969 were really 402 cubic inches. Chevrolet had so much marketing invested in the SS396 moniker that the name remained even though the engine size had increased.
