Nice looking car! Tach and gauges were always an option on SS cars.

thought so but what about the vin being a D for malibu instead of c for chevelle?

Off hand, it has 71 headlight bezels, door panels are not correct, missing remote sport mirror and the two center stainless trim pieces on the grille should not be there, otherwise it's a nice car from the pics.

If you are serious, you need to look at it in person or have a knowledgable person to inspect it.

Without documentation, I'd guess it's a clone.

Mike - those parts were most likely put on the car during the resto it went through. Really don't matter at this point with the 454 in there, and those small changes can be reversed. The car looks good. Agree - see it in person and hope that pretty paint isn't covering a bondo wagon. If it's solid it's worth the price. Good luck

thought so but what about the vin being a D for malibu instead of c for chevelle? Chevelle - Base Model, vinyl floor mat, less chrome and less options to add on, in other words the cheapest model you could get. SS not available on base model.

Chevelle Malibu - Upscale model (costs more), carpet on floor, more chrome, full range of options available which included the SS option.

The fact that this car DOES NOT have a tach makes it more likely to be a true SS.
When a Malibu is ordered with the 'round guage' option, the tach will be included but an SS WITHOUT the tach aoption will get the dash as shown in the pictures.

As far as the other incorrect items............
In the 37 years since the car was built,it may have been hit or things swapped out for owner preference.

Changing out the dash is a semi major job & that is why you see so many cars with SS badgeing but with a sweep dash.

IMO this car is an SS.

according to the v.i.n.# that car was built in Oshawa,Ca. for a small fee you can call G.M.of Canada and they will send you all of that cars build information, telling if it was an SS or not , here is the contact info as of a couple years ago...George Zapora 905-440-7636 good luck...Jeff

Also, American built cars that were imported into Canada and sold at a Canadian dealership were documented by GM of Canada and the info is available on them. Some of those cars probably made their way back to the States over the years.

Exactly,I've never heard of anyone changing out the sweep dash for a round pod dash without gauges.

they will send you all of that cars build information,Their info comes from shipping records on the cars exported or imported.

We have never offered 'build sheets' nor 'invoices'. , we work from a monthly shipping report, transferring the data to GM letterhead, and also providing some technical specifications. We can document back to 1945 on Canadian built or sold cars,

You can tell if it's a true SS by reading the cowl tag. It should have RPO code "Z25".

Nice looking car. The 5th digit of the VIN in 1972 is the engine code. The code for this car is H which indicates a 350 ci engine, 2 barrel carb, 165 hp.

I think Z15 is the option code for SS from 71 to 73.

Tough to say if it is an SS for sure, but it looks like a possibility.

If you can get that Canadian documentation, that should help. Let us know how it turns out. SS or not, it looks like a really nice car.

Interesting. Its a real SS but with 350 2 barrel. Probly not alot made like that. It makes me sit and wonder, whats more important value wise, that it was truly packaged as an SS or that it came with the more important SS options - big block 12 bolt posi mechanical gauges.

I think that SS or not, its a nice car and the money is there. Either way I would be proud to own and drive it, congrats.

thanks hoping its nice. for some reason a clone is not worht as much as a true SS when its all said and done. This one has the 454, turbo 400 and 12 bolt even if its not the correct motor it has what it needs now. being an original SS makes it that much cooler at least to me.
