I just ordered some Centerline Lazer wheels for my 72, in the 18x8 and 18.95 flavor. I want to keep a 28" rear diameter, but I'm having issues finding rear tires tall enough that dont cost 400 each. Any suggestions?

Newnan Georgia? I'm surprised I haven't seen you around. any pics of your '72?

Thats the problem I have with going to 17's because I don't want to lose my 29 inch rear diameter.

Someone mentioned in another thread that general tire made something with a little larger sidewall. It is the general grabber UHP

Maybe they make them in 18's as well?

Nitto makes a 295/45/18. They are atleast 28" tall. That would be a good tire to choose. Call Jon at Driverzinc. He has the best prices on Nitto's.

i may be wrong, but the Nitto and the grabber's are both made for suv (extra load) and that wouldn't work well would it? wouldn't the ride be harsh?

No. NITTO does make tires for SUV's but they have a couple differant tire lines designed for musclecars and performance cars. Check them out at www.nittotire.com (http://www.nittotire.com). The ones I am talking about are the NT555 for good overall street tire, NTO5 for performance driving and the NT555R for drag radials. They should have a few options available for 17 and 18 inch rims with 27 to 29 inch tires.

Yes, I know they make suv and performance tires but I am refering to the Nitto 555 295/45-18 tires mentioned, on their website, they are marked as XL, meaning extra load, which would make the ride harsh, unless i am mistaken somewhere.

oh, and Matt, I'm surpised you have never seen me, well actually not since I am always away at college. Here is a linky to some pics http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz199/ljfran2383/

I have the Nitto 555 295/45-18's on my 66 on a Budnik M5 18x10's. They were the only tire I found that have me a 28 in height. I have 4:10's with a 700r4 that has a 3.06 first gear, so I needed the extra tire height so first gear wasn't so low. The car is firm but thats how I have it set up I don't think they are too bad. And unfortunitly I didn't have much choice.

I would have even gone to a more narrow tire if I could find one with the height I needed.

Hope this helps...

Here are a couple of pics so you can see what they look like

There are also several brands that make a 275-60-17 which is around 29" or so. I had a set of Comp TA's in this size a few years back and they were a big tire!
