My son-in-law told me about a 1972 Chevelle SS 454 that a friend had for sale.
Turned out to be a "J" code 350/4 barrel car with a 454 TR400 engine and tranny.
We bought it.
Restoration is about half done but many items have been replaced and we are not sure what is correct and what is not correct.
:)On the plus side::)
Idaho title says Malibu SS (that's good)
Previous owned debadged it (against the current trend)
Son-in-law remembers when they bought the car a long time ago and it had all the badging on the car.
Got a box with old and pitted SS grille emblem, SS fender emblems, SS rear bumper emblem.
Disc brakes
Round gauges with big clock no tac
12 bolt rear end
:confused:On the minus side::confused:
Obviously the engine and tranny were changed.
It has an original pitted manual chrome drivers mirror not a remote control mirror
It has front sway bar but no rear sway bar on the 12 bolt
Old and cracked standard steering wheel but no SS in the middle...car is in storage... I think it said either Malibu or Chevelle
I see photos of front door panels on "SS" cars that have SS or Malibu in the middle or front of the door panel and with or without spears.
This one has new Year One door panels that say Malibu in the front with no spears. Could this be correct or were they replaced incorrectly?
Front turn signals are solid amber.
Aren't they supposed to be ambler/clear on an SS?
Original looking grille has "Chevelle" emblem on the drivers side.
I have seen "SS" photos with and without.
Which is correct?
Seems like the only resto book on the subject has not received good reviews for accuracy so I need the forum experts to come to the rescue and tell me the authenticity of the "minus" items.
Thanks
