Hello all, My question is this. I have a floor shift tilt column out of a 67. Is it the same as 64-66? I was going to put it in my 68 but may not. It looks the same but am not sure. Any input would be appreciated. Thanx, JOHN graemlins/thumbsup.gif

68 is one of a kind. It is also a collapsable column, 68 was the first year for this. 67 isnt collapsable. I believe i was told that the bowl was different. It wont't fit where the plastic part of the dash meets the bowl. Even the other 68 A-body columns are different, so that makes a 68 Chevelle floor shift tilt, quite a valuable item.

I could be wrong, but this is what I remember concerning the 1967-68 (first generation energy absorbing columns). All General Motors passenger cars had first generation EA columns in 67-68. These first generation columns were only used for those two model years. They will NOT bolt into later year vehicles.
Also, NONE of the energy absorbing GM columns will bolt into any 1966 (or older)GM cars.
The original 1967 A-car EA column had a long steering shaft that went from the steering column down to a flexible coupling that attached to a front mounted steering gear.
The early 1967 columns were campaigned because the long shaft was grooved for a snap ring to hold the steering column lower bearing in place. Some of the shafts broke at the snap ring groove. The campaign removed the original steering shaft and replaced it with a new shaft that did not have a groove and used a clamp to hold the bearing in place.
I thought that the 1967 steering column just carried over to 1968. However, it is possible that 1968 steering columns were revised to eliminate the long shaft and replaced it with a separate intermediate steering shaft. The separate I-shaft had a pot coupling that attached to the steering column and a flexible coupling that attached to the gear.
The 1968 column attached to the body exactly the same way as the 1967 column. The distance from the end of the steering column to the steering gear for a GM A-car was exactly the same from 1967 to 1968.
So if you had a 1968 A-car column with a long shaft or one with an intermediate steering shaft, it should bolt right into a 1967 A-car.
Those two years should interchange.

unless there were two different 67 columns I don't think jim would be correct
when I was looking for the parts to repair my 68 tilt someone had told me the 67 tilt was the same animal
the 67 I bought (was in poor condition but had the parts I thought I needed) had nothing that I could use (considering how rare they are it was not a problem getting rid of it and luckily I ended up trading it for a 68 that had what I needed)
