What ever happened to getting a car with Posi?
I've read horror stories about Auburn......
Gear whine stories about several different mfgs....
I just want to get from 2.56 peg leg, to 3.42 twin spin, what to do?????

The only units for your 7.5# 10 bolt I have seen are Auburn, I have read the horror story posts as well, don't know what to make of them. Most of the gear noise complaints are probably due to poor installation. Swapping rear gears is much more complex than most gearheads have patience for. EG shimming and runout measurments. What about a GM posi unit from the boneyard or swap in a larger ring gear unit from a GN or Monte SS etc.

Get the GM unit!!! I found one out of an 85 El Camino with a 3.07 gear ratio and put it into our Turbo Regal which was a 2.73 open carrier, it is quiet and works real well, best of all it was only $50 for the whole assembly including the brakes. I can upgrade to any ratio from 3.07 to 3.90 in the future.

The parts for the 7.5" can be located, and one alternative is to use a Lock-Right.
There is a 7.625" rear, like the 7.5", but the ring gear is larger. This can be found in later Camaros and S-10 pickups.
All G-bodies have the 7.5", exc. the 1984-88 Grand National. The 84-88 Grand National has an 8.5", which is the corporate 10-bolt.

The gear (and someone to set it up) is no problem. I can have a 3.73 or 3.42 set in a day or two. The posi unit is a WHOLE other problem.
I'd MUCH rather have a GM/Eaton unit, but if all I can get is Auburn....I'll do it.
I crawled all over Pick a Part, no posi to be found. What about the conventional yards (getting fewer all the time) ....will they ream me out for said unit?
We cruised last night, and it NEEDS a gear!

Get the GM unit. I had an 85 Elky ordered with 308 posi and it worked great. I now have a 93 S10 I ordered with a 3.42 posi and with 156K miles still will cause both wheels to spin (sometimes). You can look for a Buick GN or T-type rear.. it is 8.5 and a direct bolt in. Take a look at this site for buick stuff. Same look as Chevelle Tech. www.turbobuick.com (http://www.turbobuick.com)
