How does the handle come out of the switch?

You usually have to pull out the dash cover (cap) and look down - there is a little pushbutton on the side of the switch. When you push it in, the handle will pull free from the front.

You don't say what you're working on but, MOST h/l switches have a "button" on the side that you push in while pulling on the "knob". The knob and shaft will just pull out.

disconnect the battery
Pull the knob out fully turning on the headlights, push the button and hold it while pulling the knob the rest of the way out.

Does anyone have a spare nut that holds the switch on? I have a guy in our club who lost his and it's not available on line? I know this is a want ad, but this seems like a logical time to drop this in and he's a young member so I'd like to help him out. His switch is hanging down in the air right now. LOL
