I am looking for a new system to replace my old Rheem 80% efficient GFA furnace and A/C system.
Got a quote tonight for a 2.5 ton 15 seer A/C unit with heat pump, and a top of the line Trane 95% efficient variable heat/variable speed blower furnace. Quote came in for $12395.00 installed, with a $400 humidifier and some super duper 3 micron filter.
Does this seem in line??? When did I fall asleep for 20 years and lose track of furnace prices????

Thanks,

Dave

That seem's pretty high, for around here at least.

Well have little need for AC here but a furnace alone is $2500-5000, your quote seems high.

I have been an A/C and heat contractor in Fl. for 35 years now and that is WAYYYY out of line. Variable speed furnaces, gas or electric, are great but get some other quotes. PM me if you need info or some pricing help. Mike

That may be an "I dont really want to do it price"....we get alot of that around here. But if someone is willing to pay, the contractor will go for it.

I just replaced my furnace and A/C.

Here is the cost for materials only (1000 sq ft ranch w/ full basement):

92.1% Payne 60k BTU furnace: $600

R-22 A-coil: $250

Payne 2 ton A/C 13 seer: ~$680

Lines: $50

$300 in duct work (really hacked up trunk…ect)

Payne is re-badged carrier.

My bro is in HVAC and installed it for free. I did not go with Puron since the setup costs more. Also, the energy credit starts at 15+seer or something like that. I would not recoup the cost until over 7 years even with the tax credit.

12k sounds really high.

It is impossible to compare one job with another, especially in different areas but I agree, that sounds way way out of line to me.
Sounds like maybe three times too high.

I would ask friends and neighbors for recommendations and get more bids from reputable companies, like Chuck said.

sounds like they are charging you about $10,000+ for the install
Not bad for a days worth of work

I forgot to mention that I installed a carrier small bypass humidifier that cost roughly $150.

I also went with a 4” THK filter. One of those collapsible deals. These supposedly do an OK job and don’t cost much either. Do you really need a super duper filter? Allergies?

As mentioned before, check around and get competitive bids. We purchased ours last year, and the quotes ranged from $15,000 - $4,800. We went with the $4,800 unit as it was the same as another $10,000 quote. The unit is an Amana, and so far no problems, but here we use the air far more than the heat.

Thanks guys, I thought it was prettty steep myself. I looked around a bit and found some Goodman stuff (I think that's the brand) that has a warehouse not far from my work, that has systems for ~$3000 with about the same specs. I have a friend in the HVAC business that I need to call and see what he can get and how much to put it in.

Thanks again,

I have to go with Dean on this, about three times too high.

I had two companies come out. They didn't even bother to "look" at the system. Pretty much looked at the house, the property and the furnishings and quoted a number. $15K from one, $18k from the other. Told them thanks, but no thanks. I will be replacing the original system in the main house. 4 ton 16 Seer Heat Pump w/ gas backup going back in. Equipment cost is about $4K. Have a friend that does commercial HVAC work offered to install it with me , actually we bartered - he has 37' OffShore cruiser w/twin big blocks. I spent 2 days working with him putting new manifolds and heat exchangers, rebuilt the carbs and did a tune up on both motors (his parts, my time). He will install and setup my system when I'm ready.

Point it, the large commercial companies have excess after excess built into their cost structure.

At the wholesale level, we would sell a 15 seer heat pump system with the items you mentioned , $2,596.00 ....this is to a licensed contractor, but even if he doubled his price, and had to do additional duct work, don't drop a bar of soap around this guy:D

I would think that 6-8k would be more like it. If he paid say 3k for the material, plus $70 an hour for 40 hours, plus tax (7%) is still only $6200. I would add say another $500 for unforeseen costs and you're at $6700. Heck make it an even 7k.
