: Bumper Jack
Can anyone let me know what bumper jack assembly would work on my 71. I assume any A body would ??? What years ??? Just want to make sure. I will be keeping eye EBay and don't want to get stuck with something that is useless. Thanks
gregg1970 Jun 19th, 09, 12:21 AM Kevin, you'll need one specific to a '71-'72 chevelle. The hook that mounts on the bumper should say '71 or '72 chevelle except wagon and pick-up. Hope this helps.

i've used them a few times, and if you are restoring a car, it's one of those finishing details..
Randy 67EC Jun 19th, 09, 8:13 AM There are new repro jacks out there now. But watch out, they are for "Display use only", says it right on the box, no changing tires with them. If you can't find an original, it may be an option.
DZAUTO Jun 19th, 09, 9:12 AM As mentioned above, the jack (stand and base) are all the same (sort of). The difference is the hook that snaps into the jackstand. For 71-72, the hook will have 71 stamped into it. For 71-72 wagons and Elkys, it will have 71 wagon and pickup stamped into it.
I just gave away the original jackstand, base and hook from my 72 wagon because no one wanted it. All you would have needed was the hook.
There were two different shapes of jack stands and I don't think there was anything which determined which car got which jack stand.
One stand was a trapazoid shaped tube and the other stand was a T-shape, with a base that had a corrosponding shape hole for the stand. I can only guess that the difference in the shape of the stand was because of different suppliers to GM.
camarofreak Jun 19th, 09, 1:14 PM the reason i ask is they tend to scratch the hell out of the bumper and can distort them as well!! i use a small floor jack i got at wal mart that i can tie down with the original jack hook. but i dont take my chevelle to car shows etc..
I maybe be taking a road trip to Carlisle, PA and don't have a road jack in the trunk. Was just curious what I should be looking for (just in case)
novaderrik Jun 19th, 09, 7:25 PM i know people that didn't trust the bumper jackls, so they kept a bottle jack in the trunk- good luck trying to get a 6" tall bottle jack under a car that's sitting 2" off the ground on the shoulder of a busy highway.
you could get one of those cheap floor jacks at Wal Mart- but if you get a flat tire, you may not be able to get it under the car, either.
then there are the jacks that GM started using on the G bodies in 78- it is a low profile jack that only needs about 2" of ground clearance to get under the car. but it is supposed to register in holes in the corners of the frame, and i don't know if the older Chevelles have those holes. i think they do- it would be where the body mount bolts go.
all in all, the factory bumper jack is the best way to do it in a crunch- just make sure the car won't roll or fall to the side, only jack it up enough to get the flat off and the spare on, and try to work as quick as possible so it isn't up in the air for an extended period of time.
