I own a '72 Chevelle. It was my first car and hasn't run in years. I recently ordered a custom crate engine. However the new engine is a 87-92 350 block with the 1-piece rear main seal, the old oil dipstick will not work. I've looked at local parts stores and performance catalogs and I can't seem to find the dipstick I need.

The new dipstick plug is located at the rear of the block at the bottom near the oil pan on the passenger side. I'm using a BBC dipstick that I have bent to fit, it's just a quick fix and doesn't read correctly.

I need to find this dipstick and I can't understand why it is so difficult to find at a local parts store. I would assume that it is pretty standard, or does nobody use these blocks for build-ups.

Go to the GM Dealer, and order a dipstick and a tube from a ZZ4 crate engine.

It should be the same dipstick that is used on every small block since 1979. Or am I wrong?

junkyard time.. i like the dipstick they started using in the late 80's- it says "oil" right on it and has a plastic t handle.
