I have a 72 chevelle that came with power steering from the factory. I want to convert it to manual steering. What are the parts needed? Are the parts hard to aquire? Thanks. graemlins/beers.gif

What I would suggest is that you try and find someone with manual steering that owns an A-car of roughly the same year and has the same Chevrolet engine (i.e. big block or small block). Then swap all your power steering parts for his manual parts. You may not find anyone, but it is worth posting the question. That way you have all the parts and you aren't searching for that last bracket, hose, pulley, reservoir, bolt etc.

Fatmattbbc, I recently did that swap on my 69. I found a manual box off a earlier chevelle. Not sure of the year, but I believe it was 64-67. The pitman arm was a male type rather than a female end that hooks to the draglink. I was able to get a manual pitman arm from Sanderson in Nebraska the rag joint was different also-I used the joint that came w/ the steering box. Manual had a smaller shaft than the power unit. Other than those things- bolts right up.
Good Luck ;)

find a manual steering box off a 68-72 chevelle with the pitman arm still attatched. The pitman arm is the hard part to find since it isnt a wear item. Steering boxes off many different cars will fit (the box and pitman arm mentioned above with the male connector is off a nova or camaro) but the pitman arm is the key. If you get a box and pitman arm off a 68-72 chevelle it will bolt right up to your car with no mods, just remove your box and pump setup and install the manual box.
