: rear shelf color

My son ordered a rear shelf trey, 70 Monte Carlo- Dark saddle color. The vendor sent a lite tan colored one. Rather than send it back I figured what the heck, I will paint it as we have been painting a lot of interior stuff like the console and such. But the little flap of material that is attached will not take any kind of paint. Tried vinyl paint and plastic paint but it won't dry, just stays sticky. It almost seems like it is rubber instead of vinyl or cloth. Even tried shoe polish. Any one ever change color on these things? Thanks, RichF.

Rich, I had the same problem but needed the lighter saddle and was sent the dark saddle. I used the dye from NPD to get my saddle. I preped it and it came out great. I didn't have any extended drying time. I did have that happen to my Windlace, but it did dry over time. How long has it been drying?

From what I have found dark saddle was a 71-72 color 70 would have been saddle. I ordered three cans of dark saddle paint but did not use them after they came in as i found something a little closer to the color I needed. As for the flap you might want to try prepping it with a cleaner then prime it. Would love to see a picture of your Monte Rich. Here is what i had to match http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/monte70car/001.jpg

I let it dry for 2 days and it was still tacky and would stick to your skin and come off, so I removed it with some cleaner. I do have some Bulldog ( or something) primer but did not use it. I bought it years ago but found everything I ever sprayed worked fine with out it. I guess I should try that, but this flap almost seems like rubber.
And yes monte7ocar you are right that 70 should have been saddle color. My son bought this car last December and has discovered that some where along the line it received a 72 interior including the dash. It even had the 72 seat belts which I think are great. One thing I have read here is that the saddle or dark saddle interiors had a lot of different shades or at least over the years different pieces fade differently. Kinda looks like yours has a couple of different shades also, the wind lace looks like what we got. I redid the seats with PUI interior and changing to buckets and console so we had a lot of stuff to paint or dye. If I knew how to post some pics I would. Maybe I can find out how. Thanks, RichF.

I used the Bulldog stuff and then painted again and it was only slightly better. Still tacky. After about 5 hours I thought i would try a little Bulldog over the paint in a little corner and it seemed to get almost dry. I went over the whole flap with Bulldog and it is a lot better after a couple of hours. Very strange material.
Hey monte7ocar, what year Monte Carlo are you working on? I found that a paint for plastic called Fusion was a pretty good match in a color called satin "Espresso" or "Expresso" and used it for the bucket seat plastic back and base pieces. It is hard to match everything in the interior.

Rich I have a early 1970 Monte with the full halo top trim and the stainless piece under the headlights. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/monte70car/92f947d3-1.jpg Its been done for three years now. I used some reg. spray paint in a can called leather on a few parts its a close match. From what I can tell the seats still have the original seat covers which are saddle.

Thanks for the picture, it looks very nice. My son's Monte Carlo has a way to go to look like that. He has 8 inch ralleys and we are changing it over to buckets and a console. After the interior he wants to paint it a black cherry color. BTW, spraying Bulldog over the paint made it dry. Go figure. RichF

I have a feeling the release agent that might have been on the vinyl was keeping it from curing all the way. There is a site that deals with the 70-72 Monte Carlos(fgmcc.com). My started out as a bench seat car which we changed over to the bucket seats. The only thing on my that's not Monte is the console plate and that's for a 70-72 Chevelle.
