They used to let me use a birth certificate to fly into the Canadian airports, but now require a passport. How about driving in nowadays? Is a passport needed, or will a birth cert and driver's license work? I remember driving across with my family, and they just gave us a friendly wave back in the day.

Yes or a passport ID card

Edit: Enhanced DL works too

Those days are gone. I think that the new rules went into effect just a few weeks ago.

I went last November and was told at the time that I needed a passport. No skin off my nose...my company paid for me to get one in a day (big bucks!!!)

Thanks everyone! This info is for my son, who asked me. I told him I didn't know, but the Chevelle guys will know and I will have an answer in few minutes. You're all amazing.

Flying R/T to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean effective June 1st you'll now need a passport. Same goes for traveling via a cruise ship.
Driving across the border into either Mexico or Canada, a Passport card (or Enhanced Driver's License if available from your state) will work.
When in doubt, carry your Passport book. I've done so for years and it's always made Customs processing MUCH simplier.

Don't go? I love Canada, I lived there for two years from Quebec to Saskatchewan. I still carry a red two dollar bill in my wallet 30 years later!

Just for what it's worth, we ordered our passports, was told 6-8 weeks, got them in 4 weeks, just don't wait too long...you gotta have em now, whether cruiseing, flying, or driving, at least into Canada. Also you must have birth certificate with you. had to stand in line almost an hour at Post Office, lady in front of us didn't have birth certificate, stood in line for an hour for nothing, left in a huff blaming the feds, the lady behind the counter and everyone else in the world for her not checking before showingup. Made a real fool of herself...you know if i'm stupid, why would i blame you or someone else for my stupidity...i'll never figure people out:noway:

Just thought of a funny from comedian Steven Wright...said he was crossing Canadian border....border guard ask him if he has any weapons. his response.....what are you looking for......if that is true, i imagine little humor from border guards...we're going to Canada in September, think i'll keep my mouth shut about weapons,eh:yes:

Them people up there still owe me money! 3 winters ago my daughter and myself took one of our dogs up to be on the Canadian show circuit. When we crossed the border the guard asked what was in the crate.Lindsay told her the truth about what was going on with the dog stating he was going to be there for 6 months or more. She then asked the value of the dog and after she told her we were instructed to pull over . After a thourough search of our van, I was told to go into the building, where I was presented a tax bill on the value of the dog. Buy this time my patience was nonexistant and I went off on the clerk as to why I have to pay tax on my own dog. Later in a private room with 2 guards i was told that her dog was performing a service in Canada and thats why I had to pay the tax, which I think was over $100. They gave me a form to be filled out when he came home to be reimbursed, yeah right.... Never did get the money.Sorry off topic and long for me,but seeing this thread reminded me. BTW he did win a Canadian championship.

Thank you. :)

Eh, I've been there several times. It was fun. I wanted to bring the kids to Niagara Falls, but we have them on this side too. ;)

The most fun I had was a go kart track somewhere just off the QEW. We got thrown out for, ahem, "aggressive driving". :D

Fixed. gibbons would be proud. BTW (oh no, an abbreviation!), is it proper grammar to start gibbons' name with a lower case "g" at the beginning of the sentence since that is how he spells his CE name? :D

Yes, you need one for being on a cruise as well. There is varied time between applying for and getting a passport. figure 6-12 weeks, unless you pay for expedited service.

No, the enhanced driver's license or a passport card can be used for land or sea travel. Air is the only one that requires passport. You might as well get a passport though for the difference in cost. Then you're covered no matter where you go or how you travel. The enhanced driver's license is good in area's, like Detroit, where people commute on a daily basis. Just a little more convenient than carrying a passport.

Taken from the the candian site http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatraveloverview/qt/uscitizenborder.htm

Bottom line: As of June 1, 2009, everyone from every country that comes to Canada by air, land and sea needs a passport or equivalent travel document. (Some exceptions apply to children's passport requirements)

Equivalent travel document includes the passport card and enhanced driver's license I mentioned.

EDIT: The passport card and enhanced driver's license applies U.S. citizens only.

If you were going on an Alaskan criuse that departs Seattle,I don't think you would need one unless you were planning on getting off during one of the short stops they may make in a Canadian Port.

LOL... It's surprising how many people spell my name Gibbon's. Which is the possessive form gibbon, which is an ape.

We went on one last year. On the way back there was a medical emergency and we had to go into Canadian waters so the Canadian coast guard could fly a helicopter out. They shut down the casino and all of the shops and put plastic tie wraps on the door handles. The whole routine took several hours before we were underway again.

Then we stopped in Victoria, B.C. Immigration didn't stop one person or ask a single question. We all just walked off the ship and went into town. There were definately a lot of non-U.S. citizens on the ship. We had our passports just in case, surprised they didn't even ask us our citizenship.

We are going on an Alaskan cruise the end of July. We're flying to Seattle for 2days sightseeing, then flying from Seattle to Vancouver to get on the cruise ship (STRAIGHT from the Vancouver airport to the ship). The travel agent says we MUST have passports (and we do).
Coming back, we fly from Anchorage (USA) to Salt Lake (USA), thus no passport needed then.
