Has anyone used the KYB gas shocks and are they as good as air shocks to keep the car from bottoming out even with someone in the rear seat. I removed the air shocks from my 1970 Chevelle and replaced them with stock. I sometimes wish I hadn't. I'm either going to put KYB's on the car now or go with air shocks to level the ride. Please advise.

I have KYBs on a 67 wagon.
They do not help with loads at all so if your friends are fat like mine add air bags. I have not added bags yet.
That said - this car never felt better and will always have KYBs or comparable on it.

Shocks are not going to overcome weak springs, replace springs, air bags or back to the air shocks

use load leveler springs in the rear. shocks are not for this purpose.

Air lift brand bags... $65 from Summit or Jegs been in all my cars. Wont ride as rough as air shocks but have the ability to adjust to load in car. WELLL worth it...

We have KYBs on our '72 Lemans Sport and the ride is great. We have the HD suspension and bottoming out has not been a problem.

when I refreshed my 71's rear suspension, I switched from airshocks to KYB shocks and put airbags inside new CC5501 coil springs. Car has a nice slight rake and has no problems whatsoever. I am glad I made the switch. My only "discovery" was that the airbags don't really give me the capability to significantly increase rear height. I don't want to, so it's not a problem.

I read that a replies that mention air bags. How are they to install? I know that air shocks are about a 1-2 hour install for me. What about the air bags?

Airbag install = 1-2 hours tops. Jack up car, slide bags into coils (I find it easier to take off bottom shock mount and pull springs out) run air line. All done.

airbag installation was very simple - best to put the airbags inside the spring before installing it, but I think you can squeeze the bag flat and push between the coils too. they come with heat shields too - also easy to install.

I thought someone had put air bags and shocks on the same line. The end result was a smooth ride when more weight was added. I just was curious as to who had done that. Also how much air pressure was needed to run daily.
