I'm losing my mind!! I am bleeding the brakes on my 70 el camino and have been at it for hours for 2 days now.
I cannot get the air to stop comming out at the right rear. where is it coming from??? AAHHHGGG!!
I posted a few days ago, and have tried what was suggested.
some additional info: the pedal always felt hard(it is a factory front disc power set up)
I have 2 other older chevy's that are the same system and have never had any trouble like this. the El-C pedal never felt right, thats why I thought maybe there was air in it and began bleeding 2 days ago.
now the pedal actualy "feels" right, but the brake light comes on, the pedal goes to the floor, and I cant stop the air at the back. I have bench bled the master, I have tried bleeding from front to back and back to front at least 7 times.
with the car up on 4 jackstands and running in gear with the pedal to the floor it wont stop the back tires from spinning. there are no leaks anywhere and like I said it has been fine for a year and a half, just never "felt" as good as my other cars. I tried bleeding with it running(made no diff) , I have a "solo" bleeder tool but have had help so I can watch the fluid/air come out. it comes in bursts and just when I think I have a steady stream of fluid...more air! also, this seems weird to me, when I bleed the front disc's, the pedal goes all the way to the floor. when I bleed the back drums it stops about halfway and feels like it's against a stop. is this normal??
I have checked and rechecked for leaks..all fittings are dry. this is my only dayly driver and need to have it going by tomorow morning. what am I missing???

This probably isn't any help but I've had the best luck gravity bleeding. A tube to a jar with fluid, open the bleeder and keep the master full. All the air should be out in 10 mins or less. I suspect the hard pedal is that you are going up against the front brakes.

I've got a question for you, if I were to let gravity bleed my brakes for 10 mins, what do I do? Just walk away from my 71 Velle and in 10mins they're done? I'm also having problems with my brakes and posted in the Tech section. I hope you get your ride going quickly Mike, I know how you feel, my Velle is my daily driver to, and I know the pain of having it down when you need it the most. Good luck man, and lemme know how things turn out, maybe I can try what you do. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ok, I feel realy stooopid graemlins/clonk.gif . I can admit it. but I still have a question. I could not seem to get the stroke out of the pedal with the car off. hence the 2 days trouble. I have always bled with engine off in the past. my 69 chevelle, and the wife's 70 wagon were bled off and not a single problem on either car, and awsome brakes too!!
but for some reason I started the car and began bleeding with the help of the booster.
HO-LEE-COW!!
it cam flooding out of there. I flew through the bleeding procedure at all 4 wheels! I now have made a complete transfussion of the fluid and the pedal response is beter then it has ever been as long as I have owned the car! the pedal dosn't go to the floor, and as hard as I push, the brake light stays off. on the road test...FANTASTIC!! never felt, or worked this good as long as I have had it! WOW! it's like a new car! now it should be real fun with my new tires and wheels and my recent lowering job!
:D I still feel like a bonehead and would like to know why this car needs to be run and the others did not??

Lucky you, I've tried bleeding my brakes with the car running and no difference, well, I lie, the only difference is when I bleed with the car off, I don't come out from under the car with my lungs full of exhaust ;) Well, congrats on your new braking car graemlins/thumbsup.gif I hope I'll be able to get my lil kinks out of the way and enjoy mine graemlins/hurray.gif

hey try bench bleeding the master. reinstall. start the car. start at the rr open the bleeder. use one of those 9 dollar self bleeder tools, it has a checkvalve so no air goes back in on the pedal upstroke, then you dont need a helper, or need to open and close the bleeder. pump the pedal, I had the car on 4 stands and used my hand while more or less looking upside down so I could see when the bubbles stopped and the clean fluid came out. check the res about every 4-5 pumps if it drains dry you have to benchbleed and start all over. then do lr, rf, and lf. I hope that helps you, that worked for me, I've been rippin' up and down the street lovin' life since this afternoon. mike graemlins/beers.gif

Well, i did bench bleed the master when i bought it last year, but totally forgot that i have to re-bench bleed it if it goes dry. DOH!!! graemlins/clonk.gif ....i've tried to bleed with the car on, but my pipes r cut just in front of the rear, so it makes life fun bein under the car the the pipe in ur mouth. ...I've got one of those $25 self bleeder/vaccum pump/about 5 other things. Anyways, it used to work fairly descent, but now it doesn't do a much better job then having someone pump the pedal for me while i'm under the car. I wish i could be rippin up the streets like u....lol...soon :D graemlins/thumbsup.gif
