67 Chevelle. Is there a fitting that screws in the top of the gear box that the hoses screw into?
My hoses keak and they are tight as I dare and they are not x-threaded.

1). You don't by any chance have a steering gear box from a car that is 1980 or newer? If so, you might be trying to install a hose with a 45 degree flare connection into a gear that was designed for metric threads and an o-ring. GM changed to metric threads and o-ring connections on all of their pumps, gears, and hoses in 1980.
BTW, this could also be the other way around. A gear box from a vehicle before 1980 (you should be able to see brass 45 degree seats in the pressure and return gear ports) and trying to install hoses from a vehicle 1980 or newer (they would have blue dyed metric nuts, and tube ends with o-rings). The two different connections cannot be mixed and matched.
2). If you have 45 degree flare hoses and a gear with brass seats designed for 45 degrees, then your brass seats might just be worn out. You probably can see deep indentations in the brass seats. Since GM had millions and millions of those old gears, I would think that GM still would have the individual 45 degree flare seats available for service. You would need to screw an Easy-Out into the old seat and yank it out of the port. You should carefully tap the new seat into place.
3). One other possibility. Look closely at the face of the 45 degree flare seat on the tube end of your hose. Check to see if there is a crack in the flare. Or possibly a crack in the tubing where the nut presses down on the back side of the flare.
