I am restoring a 66 Powerglide El Camino with a tilt steering column. Right now we are putting the interior back together. We pulled the steering column so as to more easily maneuver the dash face back. While we have it out and so we thought about fixing the sloppiness in the tilt mechanism. Found a copper colored dowel pin about 1/2 " lying loose. Looking inside at the mechanism gives us pause. How difficult are these to tear down, fix and reassemble? Certainly not for amateurs? If the column was put back as is I worry about the safety issue. Found a new one by Ididit but it is expensive and consequently need to understand all my options. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve,
The swivel head can come loose and needs to be tightened. The sheetmetal cover on the head slips off (can be a pain to get off) and then tighten the phillips head screws. Would be a good idea to use some thread lock on them at this time. I was able to tighten up my tilt column this way. I don't recall the copper colored pin, but it has been many years since I had mine apart. I suggest getting a 1966 Body by Fisher manual.
