: rear-end bushing trouble
Pooch Apr 23rd, 04, 8:33 PM Hi guys I am having trouble installing my new bushings in my 12 bolt on my '70 chevelle. I have successfully installed all the rest of the bushings in my control arms. But just cant get the rear end one in. I have had my 12 bolt powder coated but no coating in the holes just clean bare metal. I have tried lubing them up with some WD=40 but cant even get them started. Don't really have access to fancy tools either. Thank you
Dcairns560 Apr 23rd, 04, 11:06 PM You might trying throwing them in the freezer for a couple hours to shrink them slightly, then lube them up and get out the BIG hammer! Some people also use a piece of pipe, a long bolt, and some big washers to draw them into the ears.
Hope this makes sense and/or helps!
cmt454 Apr 24th, 04, 8:31 AM I just installed new bushings in the "ears" I put mine in the freezer for 24 hours. They started in easy, the freezing helped shrink the bushing. I bought a tool for the installation and it took all of 5 minites to install both bushings. The tool was kinda pricey, but to me, it was worth it for the ease of installation.
Bob West Apr 24th, 04, 12:17 PM I bought a tool thru www.hrpartsnstuff.com (http://www.hrpartsnstuff.com) too it was pricey, but you use it to remove and install, piece of cake.

NYCRAT Apr 24th, 04, 6:34 PM If you don't want to spend the money on a fancy tool, you can get a piece of pipe,a bar to put across it a lenth of threaded rod and some nuts.
I think I used 2" pipe about 6" long and 1/2" threaded rod (whatever fits through the bushing)
I drilled a hole in the bar put it across the pipe ran the rod thru it and on the other side of the "ear" put the bushing. Then I tightened the nuts and "pulled" in the bushing. I used a hand rachet as opposed to an impact gun, for fear that if I cocked it it would crack the ear. Also DON'T use black pipe as it will shatter graemlins/clonk.gif and don't ask how I know this.

Andy How do you know this? smile.gif
Black pipe shatter ?
Black pipe is made of soft iron
NYCRAT Apr 25th, 04, 12:02 PM Dean,
The "black" pipe I refer to is commonly used w/ no-hub fittings for drains. I can get this rather easily(I work construction) that's how I found out. The second piece I tried was from the gas line (threaded, softer) graemlins/beers.gif

Dean Apr 25th, 04, 3:48 PM Oh, ok I see, You meant cast iron pipe, well it is black smile.gif
We plumbers use the term "black pipe" to mean metal pipe used for natural gas or steam.
NYCRAT Apr 25th, 04, 8:48 PM yea...cast iron...thats the ticket!! ;)
Hey ask me about elevator stuff and sure I'll get it right, pipes is pipes (or so I thought) graemlins/clonk.gif
dalic Apr 26th, 04, 3:05 PM Last winter I replaced the bushings in the differential of my Chevelle using the BFH (big f***ing hammer)method, wished I would have known about the tool HRpartsNstuff offers.
I tried freezing the bushings and lubing them and they were still difficult to get in.
Pooch Apr 29th, 04, 1:03 AM Thanks guys I freezed the bushings and hittem' in with a big hammer they slid right in with about five big swings. Worked real good took about 2 mins. after they were frozen. Thanks again for the advice.
chevydog66 May 2nd, 04, 1:27 AM I did the freezer on the bushings and a torch to the rearend ears. Five swings later they were in.
1ownermalibu May 2nd, 04, 8:28 AM Where to buy or what brand of bushings is best for the rearend housing? Anybody got some part #'s for these? I have some old no-hop bars on our 12bolt I need to take off and need the bushings to replace them with.
Thanks
Chris
