: 71 402 engine (Worth?)
Mastif Jun 9th, 09, 10:11 PM What is a fair price for a good running 71 402 motor with #820 heads? All dated 71. Runs good and strong, it will put out a puff of smoke on start up every now and then. I will be pulling the carb, water pump and pulleys.
Im guessing $700-$750, and I about right?
dgwar Jun 9th, 09, 10:41 PM $300.00
savage71chevelless Jun 9th, 09, 10:59 PM wow, $300 for a strong running big block?
Herb396 Jun 10th, 09, 10:24 AM I'll take two at that price,,please!
Georgia69 Jun 10th, 09, 1:28 PM Unless someone needs it for a numbers-matching deal, most people are looking for 454 cubes at a minimum. $300 is low, but $700 is most likely overly optimistic. It's probably worth around $500.
savage71chevelless Jun 10th, 09, 6:04 PM I guess I am old school, 396 or 402 cubic inches suits me just fine. Plenty fast in my 71
Bunz-T Jun 10th, 09, 8:20 PM Unless it is matched with the car it came out of it falls into the category most big blocks find themselves in...........core charge. The problem it faces for a buyer is why pay more for a motor that adds no more value to a car than a a well built 454. It is like a lot of women that wake up in the morning.......with enough work they can appear to be anything.
$400-500 if everything is attached.
RoyalPlum67SS Jun 10th, 09, 9:09 PM Sure can't build one for that . I wouldn't take $500 for it :noway:. If its a motor you can hear run, and runs good... Somebody is getting a great deal for $700 IMO.

I agree.
In fact, I bought a complete 402 +.030" a few months ago (from AL too) for $400.
savage71chevelless Jun 10th, 09, 9:37 PM Curious, how much should a strong running 350 small block go for? If you guys are finding strong running complete big blocks for $300 or $400, what in the world are small blocks going for?
So if 454 is the magic number, how much more are you guys paying for those extra 50-60 cubic inches?
Dean Jun 10th, 09, 9:42 PM Anybody can say "it's a good strong runner - just puffs a little smoke" AND MOST WILL, but most people buying a motor have to figure it's just a core and will need a rebuild unless they can drive it first.
Mastif Jun 10th, 09, 9:52 PM I would have thought $700. The #820 heads are some of the best Oval Ports out there, I would think they would bring $300-$400 alone. Then you have a 396 crank and rods.
I guess I keep it,,,lol.
Thanks guys.
savage71chevelless Jun 10th, 09, 10:05 PM Mark, good choice. I would keep it too. No way I would let a complete strong running big block go for $300
