Paul,
Direct brakes? Thats a new one to me,you northern guys sure talk funny. :D J/K I assume you're talking about manual brakes and manual steering. There are lots of ways to do this but the easiest would be to upgrade to power disc/drum setup from a 68 to 72 A body.that way you would only need from the combination valve forward and at a later date you could upgrade the rears,if you still wanted to.Do a search in the classifieds theres at least 2 ads for disc brakes that I saw. As far as power steering donors late model Caprice with 9C1 police package (or taxi), Monte carlo SS, certain Jeep cherokee,s,among a bunch of others.

so say i were to pick up a caprice scrapper how much work/customization is involved in using these parts to switch my car over..

Only the P/S box is a direct bolt in.The spindle's would be the tall spindle swap people are talking about. That requires turned down lower ball joints and a bunch of other mods as well.
IMO you would be better off spending a couple hundred on some brake parts than buying that caprice.

well i need the engine and tranny too .. and the caprice is running in good shape for $ 500. How hard is the tall spindal swap for a backyard mechanic ?

you'll need to remove all your current front brake hardware, remove the spindles, replace the outer tie rods, replace the lower ball joints.Replace the master cylinder with disc brake master. If you've ever done any minor brake or suspension repairs multiply that degree of difficulty by 5.Don,t forget removing the parts from the donor car. Also that 500 doesn't include the LBJ,tie rods and possibly the upper control arms.
The best advise I can give you is do alot of searches and read up on all thats involved in doing this disc brake swap before making your decision.I'll say this again IMO the easiest way is to find some disc brakes that fit your year chevelle.

I hate to bring this up but, the tall spindle causes geometry issues (bad ones), find the correct brake stuff, you can use 69 Camaro/Firebird spindles or the 69-74 Nova and it's sister cars, you'll need to use the steering arms from your car. 69 - 72 Grand Prix and Monte Carlos are another place to find brakes. The steering box out of the Caprice isn't a go either, it will reduce your turn radius alot, the Caprice box has differenet internal stops, you can send the box out and have the stops removed, or just get a power steering box out of the Monte/Grand Prix. Besides a steering box out of most Caprice's isn't going to be a quick ratio anyway.

Thanks a lot guys for the advice. i would go hunting for old brake parts but there is no abundance of any o those cars here on the island and shipping is a bi*ch. Does anyone know what kits are available and are the best for my car. keeping in mind i want 4 wheel disc brakes.

The rear discs from that Caprice should physically bolt to your rear axle ... do a search
