I have my car gutted and am ready to start blasting and priming. With the headliner out of the car, there seems to be some kind of wet nasty cardboard sheet bonded to the underside of the roof. Its between the support rails and the rood itself.
Have you guys ever gotten one out? If so, I need to find a replacement one too. The thing is really sandwiched in there between the roof and the support rails that run across under the roof. Doesn't look like fun to take out.

I can't remember if I had one in mine or not. Mine was so bad it might have already deteriorated. LOL I'm putting in some headliner insulation from OPGI over a brush on insulting/sound deading material like "Rhino Lining" That should do the trick. http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?catmainid=1&topcatid=24&chapterid=24&GrpCode=11780&ProdCode=HLIN001&yearrange= Welcome to the forum. Looks like I'm just down the road a bit from you. This is a great place for much needed info. I have been bothering these guys for about 2 years. Lots of great people here. I have learned a lot and saved some money as well. Good luck with your project. Bob

Yes, it's some kinda thin, weak cardboard. I know because when I had to rip down my headliner, some mice started chewing on that too besides just ruining the headliner :(
I was able to save mine, as the damaged areas were small, I just smeared some silicone on them to stop the spreading of tearing.
If yours are trashed, I'm not sure what the factory used to "stick" it to the roof, but must be tough stuff to survive 40 years of heat and cold.
Maybe someone else will chime in.

It's just sound deadoning material you can get a replacement piece for about $20 from NPD. It is not fun to scrape off, I have wire brushed one but man it is messy....

4" putty knife worked pretty good for getting my old off.

How long has the fat mat been on? I guess it's some pretty sticky stuff. I'd hate to have it drop down.

I started to remove mine also I'm using a 3" putty knife and a broom handle to scrape it off without eating too much of it.. ,most of this stuff is still on there really well after 42 years
