YouTube - Palm Pre Review

Powered by... Linux!! Comes out Saturday. What a little beauty this thing is!! I've been waiting for a phone like this! I'm sorry, I know a lot of people like the iPhone (and to be fair, as much as I hate Crapple, the iPhone isn't that bad at all. In fact, I think it's an outstanding phone) but after watching that video? There's no doubt about it... the Pre just rapes the iPhone.

I'm getting mine this week, and after I've had a chance to play with it, I'll post my review here.

What do you all think of this phone?

I like the Iphone. If Verizon had the Iphone I probably would have went with that. I have the Black Berry Storm, with a Hybrid OS. It runs smooth and gets the job done. For the first itteration of the Storm, I'm happy with it, but I bet the Storm 2 slatted for later this year, will be much better. As for the Pre, I have to tell you, I like it. The review doesn't show you till then end that there is an accelerometer. The review didn't go into much detail about the camera or about what kind of apps are availble out there, but I would definately use the PRE. I may just pick one up when my next upgrade becomes available. That is if verizon is a carrier.

Funny, I was just over at the Palm website looking at this. Says it's for the Sprint network so I'm not sure I'll get one. I'm pretty happy with Verizon plus I get a discount through work.

I have the LG Dare and pretty much surf TC on it all day. :D

I was thinking of upgrading to the Storm but I played with it a little and I'm not sure I like the clicking screen. Seems nice at first but I think it would get old fast. Especially as much as I use it.

I work with a guy who has the Storm. He's very, very happy with it! And I must say, it's a decent phone. I did a lot of playing around with it and it's solid. It works well.

If you don't want to leave V-town, then the Storm has my full endorsement.

That seems like a pretty nice phone, but I just like my iPhone so much. I dont even have the 3G iPhone, Ive got the 1st Generation iPhone and I just love it. I heard that there is supposed to be a new iPhone coming out soon. If it is everything that is supposed to be that might be the only phone that I would be willing to change over to. That Pre looks like a pretty nice phone though.

What are you paid commissions for linux stuff? :D Wouldn't mind experimenting with it on an old desktop one of these days...

Experimenting is the operative word there. I played around for 6 months or so. I'd have stuck with it in my younger days but after a decade with Windows, I can't learn Linux and teach my wife a different OS at the same time. :D

I started with Kubuntu, then Ubuntu and finally Mint, which was my favorite. But I still couldn't get my wireless card to work so I had to switch back to XP.

The only real reason was because I needed to move my computer desk where there was no way to access an ethernet jack. I got tired of running a cable across the room. :)

I have my own Windows Active Directory domain at home complete with Exchange Server and I administer a Windows AD Domain at work too. With the work apps Linux will not work because they require IE and the .NET framework. I need to play with Linux more too.

this still doesn't compare to the iphone... all it has is a cool interface from linux.... which looks ALOT like (and functions ALOT like) the iphones btw. That and the full physical keyboard for those who hate touchscreen

Reason the iphone will always be on top is the apps. Since the iphone came out, theres been like what... 5-10 immitating phones out? all lacked the app support you get with the crapple (i also hate apple)

i think theres like 20,000 apps out

Looks like a nice software/phone package, but rumor is that Apple is rolling out a few new phones this week, from $99 on. Yes I am a BIG Apple fan, but I am not a fan of their data plan costs.

My personal experience with Palm phones is the voice quality on a phone call is incredibly poor. I had to ask someone who was using one last week to switch phones because I could not understand them at all.

Hope they fixed that in this version.

My son has one of the new Blackberry phones. Data plan via Verizon is dirt cheap as compared to an iPhone, voice and data quality is excellent.

If I were needing one of these 'smart" phones today, I'd stay "idling" for a while until the new ones are all out and there are some real world experiences popping back in.

Huh?

IE and .NET are microsoft products. Neither, the Iphone, Blackberry, or Pre have windows mobile os.

We have BES server at work and all of the Blackberry we send out are setup with a bi-directional synch from outlook. With their Calenders, emails, and public folders. We are also using AD and it works find with the Blackberry OS.

You can also add you domain emails to pre and Iphone, you just may not have the synch or business managability that you get with Blackberry.

So, How do you work apps work on Blackberry or Iphones if they also do not have IE or .NET Framework? Maybe the programmers need to fix their home grown apps so support the Blackberry(emulates IE, FireFox or BB), Safari (Crapple), and Firefox Browsers (works with Windows, MAC, and Linux OS)

Just my .03

I have the Storm, and I rather like it. It doesn't have the cartoony look and feel that the Iphone has, but If I want that I can just change my theme. BB has an app store now and has quite a few apps. BTW, Apple may have 10 of thousands of Apps, but how many of them are truely worth a darn. As for the pre, so far they only have 12 apps ready to go.
