: Here's what not to do
orange396 Jun 3rd, 09, 8:30 PM This is just venting, but if you know anything that will help, please do. I just cut a coil off my front springs to drop her a bit, no fenders on, fired her up to back out of the garage. I wanted to move her a bit to settle the springs in so I could measure the drop (dropped 7/8 ") but on the way back into the garage I ran up the slab bump and the core housing flexed backwards and the fan touched my brand new Griffin. I contacted Griffin by email, I'll hear from them tom. Ticked off like crazy but we learn from our mistakes. Jerry:mad:
Stalkingbear Jun 3rd, 09, 8:42 PM When I was doing the frame off on the '65, I placed a piece of 3/4 plywood (24" x 16") just behind where the front tire would be. When I would pull it in, I could feel the tire go up and drop.... that is where I stopped. That's a bummer.
Sort of like me trying to remove the trim that I had installed wrong on the same car and, while I was able to remove the trim, I just nicked the edge of the windshield which then caused a great big old crack. The installer came out a second time, this time to replace the glass instead of just setting the glass.
We all do it.... I do, however, understand that the wrench you threw into the wall will be there for years? :D
orange396 Jun 3rd, 09, 8:47 PM Yeah, I of course said after that I should have fabbed up a makeshift bracket that would prevent the core support from moving. No wrenches thru windows or into walls, just some mild cussing, sxxx , dxxx. What were you thinking.
Stalkingbear Jun 4th, 09, 1:46 AM ... I've been know to throw a wrench or two.... just not at the car!
Rich-L79 Jun 4th, 09, 9:52 AM I once threw a wrench, it hit a can of WD-40, punctured the can which then proceeded to soak me and the car in WD-40 which was spraying out of the hole in the can. I decided not to throw things after that.
animal69 Jun 4th, 09, 1:19 PM I always have a piece of a tree stump for body work and a place to beat on so I don't destroy something. I beat the heck out of it and close up shop for the night. It's time for a break!
I have not thrown tools in a long time. But cell phones..... I have yet to find one that passes the "brick wall test". About 12 have failed durability testing. It gets expensive.
Best of luck with the radiator and other repairs.
orange396 Jun 4th, 09, 8:27 PM Yeah I like hearing stories like this. You always pass it from buddy to buddy. We even have a saying what happens in the garage stays in the garage, but its a lie we talk about and laugh about it. But I'll always remember this and I never will make this same mistake. For the time being the original radiator is going back in the car. I want to find out if the drop helped out the steering. This is a 66 Chevelle, 396 , 325 horse heads, Holley 750 mechanical sec. Pete Jackson gear drive, 2" Hookers with 3" 2 chamber Flowmasters. Its music to my ears.
swcash Jun 4th, 09, 9:40 PM Experience varies directly with equipment ruined. I have loads of experience.

lowrollin70gmc Jun 7th, 09, 1:14 PM Hindsight is 20/20, but I used to do test runs with my GMC using a 2x4 between the core and the cowl with a bungee cord to keep the core from going forward. (don't forget a bungee holding the battery down!)
Hope the rad turns out okay, sometimes it just isn't your day.
Highway Star Jun 7th, 09, 1:54 PM I have not thrown tools in a long time. But cell phones..... I have yet to find one that passes the "brick wall test". About 12 have failed durability testing. It gets expensive.

l:)
My bud just ruined a 4 core alum radiator on one of those "I'll just run it up to the corner and back" drives, the story was something about a big flex fan, a bungee corded core support and a brand new $600 radiator.
brabbit50422 Jun 7th, 09, 4:50 PM stalkingbear, i havent tried it and maybe some of you already know but i was told that if you get a crack in your window or even a little knick use a diamond and circle either the ends of the crack or the little knick and it will prevent it from spider webbing out. once again i havent tried it but i was told by my shop teacher who is a very smart guy i trust him like i trust most of you for information. also this sucks and im sorry to hear about your radiator orange hope it all works out without to much damage to the wallet.
El Camino Kid Jun 19th, 09, 9:40 PM Great...now I gotta buy my car a diamond...wait till my wife hears about this! I am sooo screwed!

Stalkingbear Jun 21st, 09, 10:04 AM My windshield experiences help keep a company called Breaker Glass in business. Great name for his business....
orange396 Jun 23rd, 09, 6:19 PM My radiator was luckily to the tune of $65. It was not that badly damaged, and the tig weld is covered up by the fan shroud, mostly. I had a used up 2004r trany in it and I have beat that into the ground. It didn't take much. But I had a fresher 350 trans ready to go and am waiting on a torque conv. I should have it this Friday and should be trying to fry off the back tires into the week end. Jerry
