: can not open web site
hotrodlincoln Jun 3rd, 09, 2:00 PM So far I have not been able to open a new web site for our legion riders chapter. Every time I try to access it I recieve the following message"
Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource / could not be found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/2.0.63 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.63 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at legionriders489.org Port 80"
Is this a problem with my computer or the web site's? Our webmaster says it's my computer and it's going to the wrong server? Any ideas about what is going on, thanks.
Well ,if you post the site your trying to open ,I'm sure someone here will try to open it and tell you their results.
Without that info ,can't tell you if it's you or the server.
hotrodlincoln Jun 3rd, 09, 2:59 PM I know other people can open the site, but I can't. "legionriders489.org"
Gary S Jun 3rd, 09, 4:24 PM It works for me. You can try flushing your temp files and trying again. Sometimes that clears out clutter that is holding you back.
hotrodlincoln Jun 3rd, 09, 4:42 PM I have cleaned all of the temp internet files etc. When I looked up the error message listed it seems that there is a problem in the web site security settings?
What addons do you have on your browser ?
DaleM Jun 3rd, 09, 5:56 PM Works for me as well with multiple browsers, IE8, Firefox 3.0.10, Safari 3.1.1, Opera 9.64, and even Google Chrome.
It's probably something in your browser or Internet security settings. I don't see how you could be 'going to the wrong server.' That'd be a DNS problem.
Try opening a Command window (Start > Run > CMD <enter>) and type:
ping legionriders489.org then press <enter>
legionriders489.org resolves to 99.198.119.90
It may sound wierd but I've had problems off and on getting to one of my own web sites because the domain name wouldn't resolve. Nobody else had problems getting to it but I seldom could. Pinging it would result in timeout errors, browsers would report the site not found, etc. I suspect something wrong with some router between my ISP and the site not resolving the domain name correctly.
A long shot, but could be what's happening to you.
hotrodlincoln Jun 3rd, 09, 6:04 PM ok, I sent the message 'ping legionriders489.org' and recieved the reply like you indicated, what does this mean? 99.198.119.90
DaleM Jun 3rd, 09, 6:42 PM ok, I sent the message 'ping legionriders489.org' and recieved the reply like you indicated, what does this mean? 99.198.119.90That's the IP address of the host for the site. If you got back (usually 4) replies with a time like 40ms, 50ms, etc. it means you can get to the site. Ping (packet internet grouper) is like calling someone on the phone. The domain name is resolved to the IP address (somewhere in the cloud) and a packet is sent to the address to see if it replies. The 'xx' ms (milisecond) is the time it takes to get the reply back to you.
So it's apparent there's nothing on the Internet stopping you from getting to site but seems more like something in your browser is blocking it.
As I noted before, I have several browsers I use to (1) test web sites I build to ensure they're working in different browsers and (2) cases like this where my main browser may begin having problems.
Opera - http://www.opera.com/download
Safari - http://www.apple.com/safari/download
Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
Google Chrome - http://www.google.com/chrome
Never hurts to have a backup browser. :D

DaleM Jun 3rd, 09, 10:08 PM did you try typing in 99.198.119.90 in the address bar? Are you dns settings set to dhcp?Brian means physically typing the IP address 99.198.119.90 instead of the name legionriders489.org in your browser's address bar.
I really don't know what you are talking about, I'm not very computer literate. what is dns settings set to dhcp?DNS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system) is domain name system, sort of like a telephone book. When you type in the domain name address such as legionriders489.org, a DNS server converts it to the IP address and locates it. DHCP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp) is dynamic host configuration protocol and is the IP address given to your PC when you make an Internet connection. Your PC's address is given to your PC by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as cox.net, sbcglobal.net, etc. - the service company you pay for your Internet access - and may or may not vary depending on the range of addresses your ISP has assigned to them.
If you can get to the Internet, your DHCP IP address is probably of no concern UNLESS the web server hosting the legionrider489.org site has a range of IP addresses blocked. You can check your PC's IP address by opening a command window and typing "ipconfig". This will return your IP address and two other sets of numbers of no real importance here. If you type "ipconfig/all" you'll also see the address of your DHCP server (usually your connected modem/router) and two IP addresses of the DNS servers of your ISP. You might contact the webmaster and see if any IP address within the ranges of your IP address or the listed DNS server's addresses are being blocked.
Things to look for vary with different browsers and even different versions of browsers. You need to be specific about the type of browser you're using and what version - usually found under Help > About.
hotrodlincoln Jun 3rd, 09, 10:34 PM OK, I did type in 99.198.119.90 and it took me to a search page from aol and google, this page listed various ip look up web sites?? I really getting in over my head I think. Just did an ipconfig/all and found that my DHcp is not enabled, what the heck is that, is it supposed to be enabled??
